Shadow Brokers teases more Windows exploits and cyberespionage data

A projection of cyber code on a hooded man

"On Tuesday, following the WannaCry attacks, the Shadow Brokers posted a new message online in which they claim to have many more Equation exploits that haven't been leaked yet, the report notes".

"TheShadowBrokers Data Dump of the Month" is a new monthly subscription model, the group said.

The Shadow Brokers hacking group is pushing a monthly subscription service offering members top secret information including "compromised network data" from the nuclear and ballistic missile programs of Russia, China, North Korea and Iran.

The release included a Windows SMB [Server Message Block] exploit, EternalBlue, which was leveraged in the recent WannaCry global ransomware attack.

On Tuesday, the group seemingly confirmed those suggestions by writing, "theshadowbrokers is deciding to show screenshots of lost theequationgroup 2013 Windows Ops Disk", speaking in reference to an older blog post revealing technical capabilities.

This EternalBlue vulnerability was actually first discovered by the United States security agency NSA, but the agency's hacking arsenal was stolen by the Shadow Brokers, and now the hacker group responsible for this theft has written a blogpost. That leak led indirectly to the creation of WannaCry and the subsequent crisis, security experts say. Regarding the type of exploits the Shadow Brokers is promising to deliver, the group says it will deliver exploits for web browsers, routers, handsets and more.

Given that the Wannacry attack has already proven the potency of the materials in their possession, it is rather alarming to consider what could be contained in their next set of leaks, especially if they actually have information regarding the nuclear programs of countries.

The group had also previously put exploits up for sale on ZeroNet for up to 250 bitcoins a piece ($454,815 today) in January, Motherboard reported. They're planning to release more NSA hacking tools in June, offering access to them to anyone willing to pay. "The nuke facility stuff is particularly concerning, (speaking) as a former physicist".

The Shadow Brokers had originally tried to sell the stolen tools in an auction, but backed down after receiving no bidders. Few buyers came forward, the group said in its blog post.

According to a statement posted on Steemit, the Shadow Brokers are putting together a service it likens to a wine of the month club, wherein every month members will receive a new batch of exploits. The US government has not commented directly on the matter.

The shadowy hacking group claimed that Microsoft released its vulnerability patch in March while also alleging that the Equation Group was paying USA tech companies not to patch vulnerabilities.

The Shadow Brokers said it made a decision to share screenshots from the NSA Equation Group's lost 2013 Windows Ops Disk in January, with the understanding that the Equation Group would then tell Microsoft and the vulnerability would be patched.
