Shootings by man who was freed early prompt changes at court

Report: Ohio chief died exiting car at nursing home shooting

Forty-three-year-old Thomas Hartless killed himself after the fatal shootings last week at a nursing home in Kirkersville, about 25 miles (39 kilometers) east of Columbus.

Medrano was reportedly killed in the center's nursing station and died of multiple gunshots from a handgun and shotgun.

In addition, investigators found a laptop and 45 cartridge cases for a shotgun in his bedroom while executing the search warrant, according to the newspaper.

He was not allowed to possess firearms due to a 2010 felony abduction conviction.

After being found guilty of three misdemeanor charges of domestic violence in March, Higgins sentenced Hartless to 90 days in jail. He was freed on April 12. Higgins says apparently "mistakes were made" and that understanding what happened is important.

Medrado also reportedly told police that Hartless had previously showed her to a hole he had dug, and said he would put her in it if she ever left him.

"I am not trying to validate why he acted the way he did", she wrote. "With intense therapy, medication compliance and lifestyle changes, I am most confident we can and will overcome our struggles". Suspect Thomas Hartless, 43, was found dead inside the nursing home in Kirkersv. A memorial service was planned Wednesday for 48-year-old nurse's aide Cindy Krantz. Authorities say Medrano obtained a protection order against Hartless a week before he killed her.

Funerals have been scheduled Friday for Medrano and Saturday for DiSario.
