Spider-Man's Venom Spinoff Will Star Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy To Star In 'Venom' Movie Spin-Off

Sony is aiming for an R-rating with Venom and considers the film a top priority, hoping to use it as a launching pad for the Spider-Man Universe that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to get off the ground. While Venom's supernatural origins make him a very different character (Eddie Brock is a news photographer who becomes a deadly creature with a drool problem after his body is taken over by an alien "symbiote"), both characters have been traditionally drawn as imposing physical threats who tower over their enemies.

The Venom movie will take on numerous characteristics of how the spin-off was originally conceived at Sony back when it would have dovetailed into Andrew Garfield's The Amazing Spider-Man films.

Hardy is no stranger to comic book movies, having played Bane in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. Others, including Halle Berry (Catwoman, X-Men), Ben Affleck (Daredevil, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, Captain America), James Marsden (Superman Returns, X-Men) and Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern, Deadpool) have all been in DC and Marvel films at some point in their career to varying degrees of success.

Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner wrote a script for 'Venom'. Let us know how excited you are about Spider-Man: Homecoming by giving it your own ComicBook User Anticipation Rating below. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, who has worked on the previous Spider-Man films with Sony, will be producing the Venom film alongside Amy Pascal. Venom was previously played by Topher Grace in 2007's Spider-Man 3. Sony Pictures Animation, meanwhile, is delivering a non-MCU animated Spider-Man movie on December 14, 2018, just two months after the new Venom movie release date. Now the actor will be making a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but will once again be playing the bad guy.
