Syrian government denies USA allegations of mass killings

US accuses Syria of killing thousands, burning bodies in crematorium

Housing and Construction Minister Yoav Gallant, a retired major general who led the Israel Defense Forces's southern command, which includes the Gaza Strip, pointed to US allegations that the Assad regime built a crematorium at a prison outside Damascus to cover up mass murders.

"Yesterday the U.S. administration pulled out a new Hollywood screenplay disconnected from reality, accusing the Syrian government of having, according to the administration, built a crematorium at the Saydnaya prison". It described the allegations as "lies" and "fabrications", noting what it called a US track record of using false claims as a pretext for military aggression.

The Syrian government forcefully rejected on Tuesday accusations by the United States that the bodies of thousands of political prisoners had been disposed of in a crematory at a prison near Damascus, describing the allegations as "lies" to justify US aggression.

The State Department said Monday the Assad government built a crematorium at the prison to rid itself of the bodies of the 50 or more prisoners it executes each day.

Numerous bodies are then burned in the crematorium "to cover up the extent of mass murders taking place", said Stuart Jones, the top United States diplomat for the Middle East.

"We are appalled by the atrocities that have been carried out by the Syrian regime and these atrocities have been carried out seemingly with the unconditional support from Russian Federation and Iran", Stuart Jones, acting assistant secretary for Near Eastern Affairs, said.

The State Department supported these accusations with satellite photographs showing the construction of the crematorium, and other newly declassified information.

The Trump administration hit a Syrian air base with a missile strike last month in retaliation for the regime's deadly chemical attack in Idlib province - a unilateral strike that prompted a skirmish of words between USA and Russian officials.

It alleged that the government of President Bashar al-Assad then is using the crematorium to hide evidence of the extent of the mass killings.

Syrian rebels and government officials are meeting separately with the United Nations envoy as peace talks on the war-torn Mideast country got underway in Geneva. "The (Assad) regime must stop all attacks on civilian and opposition forces".

In a statement, the military said the accusations by the US administration about the incidents in Saydnaya prison, or the use of barrel bombs and chemical weapons allegations are all baseless. The deal was reached with support from Iran and Turkey during ceasefire talks in the Kazakh capital of Astana earlier this month.

The Observatory says two women were killed by rocket fire in a Damascus suburbs and another was died from aerial bombardment in central Homs province.
