There's no clear victor for America in Iran's presidential election

The high stakes of Iran's presidential election

Iranians voted Friday in the country's first presidential election since its nuclear deal with world powers, as incumbent Hassan Rouhani faced a staunch challenge from a hard-line opponent over his outreach to the West.

Another voter, 22-year-old medical student Yasaman Allahgholy, said it was her duty to vote to "make my country more free, and be more popular in the world", and that it was important to protect the real improvements she has seen recently in Iran's medical system.

Voting is scheduled to run until 6 p.m., though Iran routinely extends voting for several hours in elections.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the most powerful man in Iran, symbolically cast the election's first vote and called on Iranians to turn out in huge numbers for the poll.

In addition to the unprecedented attacks on Raisi, Rouhani also used the speech to attack the heads of unelected bodies who are appointed to their positions by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Rohani, who oversaw a breakthrough nuclear deal with world powers to ease worldwide sanctions, has promised engagement with the West and more freedom for Iranians.

But he lives large in the minds of many of Iran's young people, its moderates and reformers.

In addition, as nearly all the political oppositions had been wiped out since the Iranian Revolution of 1979, even if they have differences in their programs, the presidential candidates are all different branches of the same tree.

Two of the original six approved candidates dropped out of the race days before the election, and the two others that remain - conservative Mostafa Mirsalim, a former culture minister, and centrist Mostafa Hashemitaba, a former head of the Iranian National Olympic Committee - are regarded as distant outsiders.

The two main rivals gearing up for a head-to-head battle are Hassan Rouhani and Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi. Raisi has even been discussed as a possible successor to him, though Khamenei has stopped short of endorsing anyone. And while ultimate power in Iran rests with the supreme leader, these elections do matter.

Associated Press journalists in Tehran, whose liberal and affluent voters form the bedrock of support for Rouhani, found lines at some precincts much longer than those seen in his 2013 win.

In articulating its stance towards the charade of these presidential elections, the Tudeh Party has stated: "Non-participation in the election and declining to vote for the candidates of the theocratic regime is neither a blind act nor a passive one".

"Raisi is the enthusiastic candidate of the latter, while Rohani is the default candidate of the former", he said.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Farhad Tajarri, the spokesman for the central committee tasked with monitoring city and village councils elections, described the turnout as "huge". But if he loses the election by a wide margin, that path is less likely, as his backers would struggle to justify his ascension to absolute power when voters didn't even want him to be president. Rouhani asked. He also accused Raisi of using Astan-e Quds Razavi for his campaign. However, unemployment remains high, and many feel he is not a strong President.

Lined up in front of the mosque, Mohsen Namazi, 24, a bank clerk spirited by the high turn-out of the voters, constantly leaned back and forth, right and left, to observe the number of people in the queue and their passion for the occasion.

His opponent was the then president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a firebrand hardliner who was looking to secure his second term in office. "Now my colleagues can travel to France and the United States", she said.

The president of the Islamic Republic oversees a vast state bureaucracy employing more than 2 million people, is charged with naming Cabinet members and other officials to key posts, and plays a significant role in shaping both domestic and foreign policy.

At a campaign rally last week at the Azadi stadium in Tehran, Rouhani took to the stage and delivered a speech more worthy of an outsider than the incumbent. A Raisi victory on the other hand would lead to more coordination between the Revolutionary Guards Corps and the foreign ministry with an increased focus on policies towards Syria and Iraq.At a time when the Iranian economy is still reeling and large parts of the Middle East are torn apart by conflict, a lot rides on the result.
