Trump doesn't plan to use Israel trip to announce embassy move

White House No Plans to Announce Embassy Move During Israel Visit by Charlie Spiering17 May 20170 17 May 2017 17 May 2017

Next week he will be the first sitting USA president to visit the Western Wall in the Old City, but his team rejected a request from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accompany him.

Trump said in a speech to the American Israeli Political Action Committee conference in March 2016 that he would move the USA embassy to Jerusalem, calling it "the eternal capital of the Jewish people".

A diplomatic blowup over the status of Jerusalem, followed by revelations that Trump had shared highly classified Israeli intelligence with Russian Federation, has reinforced the president's image as dangerously unpredictable. "I hope we can move without any pressure".

THE FACTS: Haley initially appeared to be voicing her personal view about the wall, but that's a distinction ambassadors don't get to make.

Michael described Israel as having far better intelligence capabilities in the region than the United States, making it a critical partner for Washington.

An official says several dozen hunger-striking Palestinians have been transferred in recent days to special wings of Israeli prisons for additional medical supervision. Netanyahu's office said it was astonished by the comment.

The Western Wall was part of the retaining wall around the biblical Jewish temple complex that once sat on what Jews call the Temple Mount. Israel captured the Old City and the rest of east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war and annexed the area, in a move that most of the world community does not recognize. It is widely assumed that Israel would retain control over the site under a potential peace deal.

Trump is scheduled to arrive in Israel on Monday from Saudi Arabia and is slated to give a speech at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.

Trump campaigned on a pledge to move the USA embassy in support of Israel, but has since backed away from the promise, particularly after Palestine observed that the move would imply a prejudice on the part of the United States and hinder Washington's ability to broker peace between the two countries. The Palestinians see it as the capital of a future independent state.

Despite the passage of the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995 by the U.S. Congress, which required the relocation of U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, former U.S. presidents, including George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, consistently renewed a presidential waiver to delay the relocation on national security interests.
