Trump May Appoint Former Senator Joe Lieberman New FBI Director

Sen. John Cornyn was top FBI choice for Trump

Joe Lieberman gives a "thumbs-up" as he leaves the West Wing of the White House in Washington, Wednesday, May 17, 2017.

"We're very close to an Federal Bureau of Investigation director", the President said during an event in the Oval Office said, giving an emphatic "yes" when asked if Lieberman was among the finalists.

Lieberman, a Democrat who turned Independent until he quit the Senate in 2013, works for a law firm, one of whose partners - Marc Kasowitz - has represented Trump for years.

"He will meet with four more: Andrew McCabe, Frank Keating, Richard McFeely and Joe Lieberman". The veteran FBI official made headlines for his congressional testimony last week that rejected the White House's claim that Comey had lost the support of rank-and-file agents and for disputing the administration's characterization of an investigation into potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump White House.

President Donald Trump says a thorough investigation will confirm what he says is already known: that there was no collusion between his presidential campaign and any foreign entity. John McCain's presidential bid in 2008 over Barack Obama, speaking at the Republican National Convention that year.

The Trump administration is looking to fill the job, which requires Senate confirmation, after Trump abruptly fired FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday.

Lieberman's closest law enforcement experience is serving as his state's attorney general, an elected position.

House Republicans have mixed reactions to the surprise announcement that the Justice Department has appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special counsel to oversee a federal investigation into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign in 2016.

Democrats, however, may not love their former vice-presidential candidate, who ran alongside Al Gore in 2000.

Trump met with Lieberman Wednesday and found him "agreeable", a source said.

In order to keep his senate seat in 2006, Lieberman chose to run as an Independent under the "Connecticut for Lieberman" party label.

Lieberman became an independent after CT voters defeated him in a Democratic primary, largely a result of his support of the Iraq war.

When asked point-blank by a reporter in the Oval Office Thursday if Lieberman was the leading contender, Trump replied, "Yes".

The No. 2 Senate Republican, John Cornyn of Texas, said he was supportive of investigations in Congress but expressed concern about the "proliferation" of hearings. Lieberman was the first Democratic senator to criticize former President Bill Clinton publicly during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

Before his election to the U.S. Senate, Lieberman served as Connecticut's attorney general for six years. The FBI rank and file also like the idea of Rogers as the next FBI chief, but several lawmakers have been told by the White House that "it helps us to have him out there, but he is not our kind of FBI director". He did not seek re-election in 2012.

In recent testimony before Congress, Mr. McCabe rejected the White House criticism that rank-and-file agents had lost faith in Mr. Comey.
