Trump says he has 'absolute right' to release terrorism info to Russians

Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs shows President Donald Trump meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington Wednesday

"Two other senior officials who were present, including the secretary of state, remember the meeting the same way and have said so".

The briefing comes as lawmakers have demanded reports from the White House on what exactly Trump told Russia's foreign minister and ambassador to the US.

"We appreciate the relationship we have with Israel and appreciate the exchange of information we have with them", Spicer said in a press briefing Tuesday.

"That the Russians would be the potential recipients of this intelligence and may be able to determine its source is all the more problematic, since the Russian interest in Syria and elsewhere is, in many respects, deeply antithetical to our own", Schiff said.

The meeting itself was a personal request from Vladimir Putin.

The controversy engulfed the White House.

The panel's top Democrat, Elijah Cummings of Maryland, a constant Trump critic, called the allegation of Trump pressure on Comey "explosive" and said "it appears like a textbook case of criminal obstruction of justice".

"I get great intel".

A person familiar with the trip's planning says Trump has expressed some concern at the length of the foreign swing.

The New York Times was first to report Israel was an intelligence source.

Officials told CNN at the time that the ban came about following the collection of intercepted material and "human intelligence".

White House officials originally regarded the worldwide swing as a reset for a beleaguered President and his staff.

McMaster said the real threat to national security was leakers "releasing information to the press".

The newspaper claimed details that the president revealed could expose a source of information, based on leaks from intelligence officials. But she added that she had previously scheduled chats lined up in the coming days with other foreign ministers: "I do have some conversations with some other partners set up later this week".

A statement from Deputy National Security Adviser Dina Powell read in part: "This story is false".

Mr Trump tweeted that he had shared "facts pertaining to terrorism and airline safety" and wanted Russian Federation to do more against so-called Islamic State.

"At no time were any intelligence sources or methods discussed and no military operations were disclosed that were not already known publicly", McMaster said.

Trump, he said, "made the decision in the context of the conversation which was wholly appropriate".

Version One: White House aides initially disputed the premise of the reporting.

Coming days before Trump's first trip overseas, it also raised questions about his standing with world leaders and led some countries to start second-guessing their own intelligence-sharing agreements with the U.S.

The idea that Trump could share information gleaned in those conversations with countries that are not friendly to the United States could chill some of these interactions and make world leaders question what they share with Trump.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, Republican chairman of the House oversight committee, sent a letter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday requesting that it turn over all documents and recordings that detail communications between Comey and Trump. They got there just before the news upended Washington, and early enough that it wasn't a hot dinner discussion topic.

Vice President Mike Pence insisted that national security adviser Mike Flynn had not discussed Obama-era Russian sanctions when he and Kislyak spoke during Trump's transition to power.
