Trump says he's 'very close' to naming an Federal Bureau of Investigation director

White House press secretary Sean Spicer spoke to reporters about the FBI director interviews during an Air Force One flight back from Conncticut where the president delivered a commencement address at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy

Despite speculation that Trump might announce the pick at a White House news conference Thursday, a longtime Lieberman supporter said that he had not yet accepted the position as of Thursday afternoon. The president departs Friday on his inaugural overseas trip, a four-country, five-stop journey tour of the Middle East and Europe that will keep him out of the country for more than a week.

Between Donald Trump's sudden decision to fire FBI Director James Comey last week and former agency head Robert Mueller's appointment as special prosecutor for all things Russian Federation, the "Bureau" has received a lot of publicity lately. From a series of policy defections on key issues to Lieberman's decision to run as an independent in CT after he lost the Democratic primary to challenger Ned Lamont in 2006, the former senator made many enemies among his own caucus.

Lieberman traveled to the White House on Wednesday on short notice for an interview and afterward said it was a "good meeting". Frank Keating (R), former FBI official Richard McFeely and acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe.

"It was unexpected", Lieberman said of being considered to lead the bureau, according to NBC News.

Among their concerns was Mr Lieberman's past praise of Mr Michael Flynn, Mr Trump's first national security adviser, who was sacked in February after misleading officials about his conversations with Russian officials. Russian officials have repeatedly denied charges of interfering in the United States elections, saying the allegations are absurd and represent an attempt to divert the U.S. public's attention from revealed instances corruption as well as other pressing domestic issues.

Lieberman was first elected to the Senate in 1988. He has served as co-chairman of No Labels, a centrist group that promotes bipartisanship.

Keating, 73, served as Oklahoma governor from 1995 to 2003, and oversaw the state's response to the Oklahoma City federal-building bombing in 1995. Keating earned a law degree from OU, and has also worked under former presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

"Like everything else, this was to be expected, President Trump is keeping his promise", Lieberman, the former chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, told Business Insider in an interview.
