Trump tells Russians Comey was a 'nut job'

Trump denies ever urging Comey to back off Flynn investigation

President Trump fired Comey last Tuesday. "He was insane, a real nut job", Trump said, according to the Times, which cited a document summarizing the meeting and read to it by a USA official.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer offered a statement that did not dispute Trump's quotes and instead presented them as the president talking frankly about the "pressure" Comey had put on Trump's diplomatic responsibilities.

Also Friday, The Washington Post dropped its own bombshell, revealed that a current White House official who is "close to the president" has been identified as a significant person of interest in the investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

Comey's highly-anticipated testimony, which will be slated after the Memorial Day congressional recess, comes after he was sacked by Trump May 9 amid a mounting investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 election and possible ties between Trump campaign associates and the country. The details of his comments to the Russians would seem to bolster theories that Trump fired Comey in an effort to choke off the Russia investigation.

Also this week, former Federal Bureau of Investigation director Robert Mueller was appointed as a special counsel to oversee the Russian Federation probe. Comey also reportedly filed a memo after a February 14 White House meeting in which he claimed that Trump asked him to end the FBI's investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

When asked about the Justice Department appointing Mueller as Special Counsel, the President deflected the question.

"It's now considered a criminal investigation", said Sen. But he added, "I wrote it". Rosenstein denounced that as "profoundly wrong and unfair".

Senator Mark Warner, ranking member of the Committee, hoped that Comey's testimony will help answer some of the questions that have arisen since he was sacked by Trump last week.

Trump has reacted furiously to the appointment. That fact could significantly stymie Mueller's ability to conduct a sweeping investigation of Trump and his associates, according to Reuters.

"I came out of there knowing that I trust this deputy attorney general, that I trust this special counsel and while he didn't answer many questions, he had a clear reason for not answering", Cleaver said.

The Justice Department, however, can waive the wait period for Mueller. Sessions has recused himself from the Trump-Russia probe, citing his close involvement in the Trump campaign a year ago.

During the meeting - in which Trump allegedly revealed classified information provided by Israel - the president reportedly said Comey's firing a day earlier had had relieved him of "great pressure" over his ties to Russian Federation.
