Trump warns sacked Federal Bureau of Investigation chief over media leaks

President Donald Trump talks to reporters in the Oval Office of the White House Wednesday

After Comey's firing was announced on Tuesday, press secretary Sean Spicer was reported to have hid among the bushes outside of the White House in an effort to avoid taking questions. "Unsafe because he may be obstructing justice, in terms of the investigation that really goes to the heart of our democracy -the accountability of the President, and the people around him, to the rule of law - protecting our democracy from an invasion - a cyber-invasion by the Russians", he said. Trump said there was no "collusion between me and my campaign and the Russians", and that "the Russians did not affect the vote". "Another president, Jeannine, will sit in the Oval Office and do practically nothing all day".

May 12, 2017: Trump tweets that Comey "better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"

The Trump administration was criticized this week when Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders struggled to reconcile conflicting statements made by President Trump regarding the firing of FBI Director James Comey. Trump's tweet came the morning after he asserted Comey had told him three times he wasn't under FBI investigation. He promised he would tolerate no interference from the White House and would not provide the administration with updates on its progress.

Trump wrote to Comey that the dismissal was necessary to restore public trust and confidence. "He would say, 'Look sir, I really can't get into it, and you don't want me to'".

"From a constitutional perspective, Trump can make whatever demands of his principal officers he wishes, and can fire them at will", said Josh Blackman, a law professor at South Texas College of Law Houston. Trump tells The Associated Press by telephone after the meeting that he "learned a lot" but declines to say whether he accepted their conclusion about Russian Federation.

The point of greatest sensitivity raised by Trump's decision to fire Comey is its potential connection to the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's role in investigating what he described as "the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia's efforts".

The president told Lester Holt on Thursday that he had planned to fire Comey all along, regardless of what top Justice Department officials had to say about the decision.

The FBI probe and parallel congressional investigations have hung over Trump's presidency since he took office in January and threaten to overwhelm his policy priorities.

During the dinner, Comey refused to pledge his loyalty and instead offered the president his honesty.

Rosenstein's memo, on the other hand, hit Comey for being unfair to Clinton by speaking to the press in July and broadcasting the FBI's decision to reopen the investigation in October. Not everyone agreed with each Comey decision, but he was a popular and well-regarded director, they said.

"You never rule anything out", he said, according to Politico.
