Turkey Protesters Say Erdogan Supporters Attacked Them in Washington

Brett McGurk the US special envoy to the anti-ISIL coalition

United States officials expressed outrage after what they described as a "brutal attack" Tuesday by Erdogan bodyguards on a small group of pro-Kurdish protesters who gathered on the USA capital's "Embassy Row" after Erdogan met with President Donald Trump at the White House. The embassy alleged, without evidence, that the demonstrators were associated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which has waged a three-decade-long insurgency against Turkey and is considered a terrorist group by the United States.

Several lawmakers have joined a growing chorus of voices demanding action in the wake of the bloody brawl that sent nine to the hospital on Tuesday - just hours after Erdogan met with President Donald Trump at the White House.

The U.S. State Department voiced concerns Wednesday about the violent confrontation outside the Turkish embassy in Washington the day before that led to 11 people being injured and two arrests.

"The Metropolitan Police Department made two arrests following yesterday's incidents and we have every intention to pursue charges against the other individuals involved", the statement continued.

The US "should throw their ambassador the hell out of the United States of America", Senator John McCain of Arizona, chairman of the Senate Armed Service committee said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe". "This kind of thing can not go un-responded to diplomatically", Senator John McCain told MSNBC's Morning Joe programme on Thursday.

Speaking in Istanbul two days after meeting President Donald Trump in Washington, Erdogan criticized the USA decision to ally with "terror organizations" for the long-awaited operation to capture Raqqa, the de facto capital of the Islamic State group.

"Police did not heed Turkish demands to intervene", the news agency said, and Erdogan's security team and Turkish citizens moved in and "dispersed them".

The State Department says it has expressed its concern to the Turkish government in the strongest possible terms.

During the visit, Trump lauded Erdogan as an important ally in the "fight against terrorism" and did not mention Erdogan's domestic crackdown after last year's failed coup attempt.

Video shows people pushing past police to confront a small group of protesters across the street in Sheridan Circle. The descent of Turkey into a strongman state is discouraging, and there's no sign that it's going to turn around any time soon.

ISTANBUL, May 18 (Reuters) - Turkey is ready to retaliate if it faces a threat from the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia and will not shirk from launching a military campaign if need be, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday.

"The Turkish-Americans responded in self-defense", the statement from the Turkish embassy said.

Turkey also accused the protestors of belonging to a terror group known as the PKK.
