United States officials criticize Turkey after attack on DC protesters

Former Fox News chief Roger Ailes dead at 77

A violent confrontation Tuesday evening outside the Turkish ambassador's residence in Northwest Washington resulted in 11 people being injured.

Erdogan was in the USA capital on Tuesday to meet with President Donald Trump. It appears that Erdogan speaks to security guards before the attack begins. Two people were arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault, and D.C. police said Wednesday the investigation is continuing, with the possibility of other people being charged.

"Violence is never an appropriate response to free speech, and we support the rights of people everywhere to free expression and peaceful protest", the statement read.

Turkey's official news station, Anadolu, reported however that the bodyguards and Turkish citizens moved on the protesters after the police refused to silence their anti-Erdogan chants.

"The Turkish-Americans responded in self-defense", the statement said.

"We should throw their ambassador the hell out of the United States of America", he said yesterday.

"We are communicating our concern to the Turkish government in the strongest possible terms". "There is no excuse for this kind of thuggish behavior".

"I ask that you immediately look into this matter and bring all appropriate charges before these individuals leave the United States".

The Turkish Embassy said Wednesday night, though, that the demonstration was "unpermitted and provocative".

Metropolitan Police Department Chief Peter Newsham condemned the action Wednesday as an "assault" on those protesting "peacefully", warning that the department will "pursue everything that's within our legal power to hold the folks that were responsible accountable for their actions".

But Trump stood out in his praise for Erdogan in April, surprising the worldwide community when he called the Turkish president to congratulate him on a controversial referendum win that expanded his power.

"It happened really fast", he said, insisting that he was trying to defend himself and to protect a police officer, not attack one. Online court records say he must return to court June 1 and Necmi on July 12.

Turkey's foreign minister says the country will continue to fight Syrian Kurdish militants, and he has relayed this position to the United States, which considers them a key ally against the Islamic State group.

The YPG's parent organisation the Democratic Union party (PYD) is a sister organisation to Turkey's banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

At their meeting Tuesday, Trump said the US would re-establish its military and economic partnership with Turkey, committing to backing Turkey's defense against both Islamic State and the PKK.
