US military jets escort civilian plane into Honolulu airport

A man who caused a disturbance aboard an American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Hawaii on Friday was overpowered by passengers and crew and taped to a seat, passengers said.

Commander Dave Benham said: "The F-22s escorted the airliner to the airport in accordance with homeland defence procedures".

Sources reportedly told HawaiiNewsNow that the man also breached security at Los Angeles International Airport, but that he "was assessed and allowed to board AA Flight 31 anyway".

The airline issued a statement stating: "American Airlines Flight 31, an Airbus A321 from Los Angeles to Honolulu, landed safely at 11:35 am HST".

"No one really paid much attention to it until we landed and the flight attendants would not let anyone get out of their seats", Jaren Yang, one of the passengers of the flight, told NBC News. The pilot announced that because of a small loss in pressure, the plane would be forced to land in Honolulu at a low altitude.

Video from KGMB/KHNL showed two law enforcement officers escorting a person with hands behind their back off the plane. Shortly before 3 a.m.at LAX, airport police responded to a radio call of a passenger, confirmed by a source to be Uskanil, going through a door from the Terminal 5 concourse that led out onto the airfield ramp.

As the suspect approached the drink cart at the rear of first class, the flight attendant in economy told him, "Sir, please stop". Federal agents met the plane from Los Angeles when it landed in Honolulu and took the man into custody. Before the flight to Hawaii, Uskanil was arrested about 2:45 a.m.

Police say Uskanil had been drinking but didn't meet the criteria to be arrested for it.

One of the passengers who helped was an off-duty law enforcement officer, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

"Crazy! Someone tried to break into the cockpit on my flight from LA to Honolulu", Instagram user bplus.noisefloor.dnb wrote.

"Well, it was all kind of surreal", passenger Peggy Lorenzen told the Honolulu station. "DHS is prepared to assist other federal and local law enforcement agencies as they investigate the incident", DHS said. There are no other reports of disruptions, but the department said it is monitoring all flights Friday out of caution.
