USA to continue with Obama-era Iran nuclear deal, for now

US maintains Iran nuclear deal sanctions relief

Iran said on Thursday that the new U.S sanctions targeting it's ballistic missile program show "ill will" and are likely to undermine the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers. According to media reports, Fractur engaged in the sale and delivery of explosives to the Syrian government.

Ahmadi is the director of Iran's Shahid Bakeri Industries Group, which is responsible for Iran's solid-fuel ballistic-missile program, the Treasury statement said.

While Trump criticized the nuclear pact as a presidential candidate - at one point saying he would "dismantle the disastrous deal with Iran" - Wednesday's actions demonstrated that he has decided, at least for now, to keep it.

Washington nevertheless maintained a stern tone, imposing new measures to punish Iranian defense officials and a Chinese business tied to Tehran's banned missile program.

The designation of the seven Iranian and Chinese people and companies blocks any assets they might have in the U.S. and bars Americans and non-Americans from doing business with them, at the risk of being blacklisted by the US.

The Trump administration's wavering of the most punitive sanctions that it imposed on Iran before the deal was struck could be its way of trying to embolden the Rouhani camp.

Wednesday was the deadline for the United States to extend sanctions relief to the Iranian Regime, a move which must be done every 120 days.

Tillerson at that time said the Trump administration would nonetheless review the terms of the deal because of Iran's violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions related to ballistic missile testing, as well as its backing of terrorism and taking sides in regional unrest. His re-election would be welcomed by Europeans who desire more business dealings with Tehran and who likely would resist or ignore any USA efforts to slap nuclear sanctions back on Iran.

Many Iranians have expressed their disappointment at the fact that the economic boom they expected post-sanctions relief has not yet come, suggesting a growing impatience among the Iranian population with Rouhani's continued optimistic talk of the nuclear accords.

Despite these actions and President Donald Trump's campaign trail claims, the administration will continue to pursue former President Obama's Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), better known as the Iran Deal. "We urge our partners around the world to join us in calling out individuals and entities who violate worldwide sanctions targeting Iran's human rights abuses".

Mr Trump has consistently warned Iran over its missile activity, and has criticised the terms of the deal made by Mr Obama - at one point claiming his "number one priority" if elected would be "to dismantle the disastrous deal".But the other nations involved in the agreement - including China, Russia, and the United Kingdom - believe it is the best way to prevent Iran getting a nuclear weapon.
