Vietnamese Gov't issues warnings against WannaCry ransomware ransomware

A red alert was issued by the Computer Emergency Response Team of India

Payment in crypto-currency bitcoin helps hackers cover their tracks.

"Whether or not you think the USA government should be spending a fortune developing such cyber-weapons, surely it is obvious that the weapons they develop should be properly secured", said Phillip Hallam-Baker, principal scientist for New Jersey-based cybersecurity firm Comodo, in an emailed statement.

The name Ransomware suggests, The WannaCrypt0r 2.0 bug encoded all the information from the computer, and lock down the pc and requested that the client pays the said money by a message on the screen.

Smith's statement comes as businesses, hospitals and regular consumers have fallen victims to a huge ransomware attack as hackers exploit a vulnerability in Microsoft's operating system. In the UK's National Health Service, which was particularly badly hit, at least 47 organisations were affected. Some have already found new variants of ransomware similar to WannaCry but there is no proof that any system has been affected with the new variants so far.

In Japan, almost 600 companies, including electronics major Hitachi and automaker Nissan, were reportedly affected by the global ransomware attack, officials confirmed on Monday.

Fedex said Friday it was "experiencing interference with some of our windows-based systems caused by malware".

The Financial Times claims that Microsoft withheld a free fix for older versions of its software, instead charging users $1,000 annually per device for protection against WannaCry-like threats.

How did the attack spread so fast?

In most cases you get Ransomware by opening an email attachment and bad people suddenly have complete control of your computer.

People still haven't learnt their lesson when it comes to running Windows XP, it seems.

GSTN, the company set up to provide the IT infrastructure for GST rollout, will not be impacted by the WannaCry ransomware attack as its systems do not run on Microsoft software, its CEO Prakash Kumar said.

Who is behind the attack? .

Europol has been analysing the virus and was yet to identify the hacking group behind the massive attacks.

Lots of users, particularly those who are overseas, don't use automatic updates and leave their systems vulnerable, he said.

Wellsmore and other cybersecurity experts said the identity of the perpetrators is still unknown.

"When you are talking about patching with large corporations, it's not a question of do we patch or do we not patch", said John Miller, head of Threat Intelligence at security firm FireEye.
