WannaCry is your fault — Microsoft to NSA

WannaCry How slow speed outdated IT infra at ATMs saved India Tv

From governments to individuals, there's plenty of finger-pointing going on following the latest global cyberattack. While department heads and IT administrators deserve some of the blame, ultimately, elected officials who refuse to allocate money for necessary upgrades are culpable.

Security experts have long warned about attacks on large numbers of unpatched systems, and while there's a slow migration to newer systems, it's not moving fast enough.

Then there's the US government, whose Windows hacking tools were leaked to the internet and got into the hands of cybercriminals.

Microsoft did not confirm to AFP when it made the patch free.

In any case, the attack has been identified by the cybersecurity firm Proofpoint. "Still, the NSA can't be very proud of this".

And, she says because there are multiple variants of the WannaCry ransomware, it is still a very serious worldwide cyber threat.

The vulnerability in Windows was first found by National Security Agency (NSA) of United States of America and the agency has faced much criticism for dumping information related to the vulnerability online.

The ACLU, meanwhile, urged Congress to pass a law requiring the government to disclose vulnerabilities to companies "in a timely manner", so that they can patch them as soon as possible.

In mid-march, Microsoft distributed a security update after it detected the security flaw in its XP operating system that enabled the so-called WannaCry ransomware to infiltrate and freeze computers last week. Beijing has previously said the proliferation of fake news on USA social media sites, which are largely banned in China, is a reason to tighten global cyber governance.

If there's anything, Microsoft should indeed be appreciated for their response on the entire issue.

Still, it was Microsoft that wrote the exploitable software to begin with.

But the software giant only sent the free security update - or patch - to users of the most recent version of the Windows 10 operating system, the report said.

"Clearly having the vulnerability be in Microsoft software was one of the key elements", said Steve Grobman, chief technology officer of McAfee, a security company in Santa Clara, California. Complexity in IT networks and third party risk will become a much larger issue for businesses as an organisation's cyber security protection is only as great as that of the weakest link in the network. The computers would operate normally, but the miner would also run in the background. Multiple backups also help.

The cybercriminals then threaten to destroy their data if a ransom is not paid.

"It's not rocket science", Litan said.

"We haven't seen anything quite like this before-the way in which it has spread and affected so many people", says Avi Rubin, who is director of the Health and Medical Security Lab at Johns Hopkins University. Asked what the company is doing to prevent such exploitations, he cited "basic IT security blocking and tackling".

"The size of the outbreak is indicative of the number of machines out there which have not been patched with security updates".

The worm called "wannacry" spread from one computer on the net to another, encrypted important files, and would only delete them unless a ransom was paid. If they caught, that is.
