White House calls Sally Yates a 'political opponent' of Trump

Trump White House knew Michael Flynn was possible Russian blackmail target for 18 days before firing him, Sally Yates tells Senate committee

The White House is trying to spin their not firing National Security Adviser Michael Flynn after acting Attorney General Sally Yates reported to them that Flynn was compromised by his contacts with Russian Federation.

Yates in January warned White House officials that Flynn, a retired U.S. Army general, spoke with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak in December, the same day the Obama administration ordered sanctions on Russia for its alleged hacking of Clinton's presidential campaign. "I think ultimately we were proved right about who needed to be in the loop on that, because she ultimately chose to disregard the president's lawful order".

Mr Obama, who had fired Mr Flynn as the head of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), told Mr Trump that he would have profound concerns about Mr Flynn becoming a top national security aide.

The same day Yates offered the White House a review of the evidence against Flynn, she was sacked by Donald Trump for opposing his executive order mandating a ban on Muslim travel.

If the Flynn story is an albatross around the administration's neck, the travel ban exemplifies just how disheveled, ill-prepared and petty the White House can be when Trump wants something done quickly.

Later in the same briefing, Spicer was asked whether the White House placed Flynn under any additional restrictions between Yates' warning and his eventual ouster.

Spicer added that he was not aware of any security restrictions placed on Flynn after the warning.

In tweets on Monday, Mr Trump doubled down on that stance.

Strip down Spicer's argument about why Trump didn't act on Flynn for 18 days after the first Yates-McGahn meeting, and you are left with this: They dismissed or downplayed what Yates told them because they viewed her as a political enemy.

Republican Sen. John Cornyn said her actions with regard to the executive order were "enormously disappointing" and accused her of undermining the powers of the President because she disagreed with Trump's order "as a policy matter". And certainly never mind the evidence that Yates presented to the White House.

"This was a problem because" it "created a compromised situation" where the national security adviser "essentially could be blackmailed by the Russians".

Yates is not on record as a vocal Clinton supporter.

Director Clapper reiterated what everybody, including the fake media already knows- there is "no evidence" of collusion w/ Russian Federation and Trump.

In her testimony, Yates said that she had called McGahn the Monday after they met to tell him the material was ready to review.

Trump said in a press conference three days after Flynn resigned, however, that when he looked at the information provided to him about Flynn's conversations with Kislyak, "I said, 'I don't think he did anything wrong".

- Matt Viser (@mviser) May 9, 2017Spicer won't detail why Trump kept Flynn on the job for 11 days between WH seeing Yates evidence & Flynn axing but "we did the right thing".

It is hard to convey the level of alarm this would raise in the mind of the chief law enforcement officer of the United States - which Yates was, briefly, before President Donald Trump fired her at the end of January - or the fear it would inflict at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. During that period, Flynn accepted tens of thousands of dollars from a Russian state-sponsored television network. He's dismissed FBI and congressional investigations into his campaign's possible ties to the election meddling as a "hoax" driven by Democrats bitter over losing the White House.
