Will Smith, Pedro Almodovar open testy Cannes Film Festival

Cannes Film Festival and Netflix square off over the inclusion of streaming releases

Jury president Pedro Almodovar agreed with the change, saying films should always be seen on the big screen and he was "concerned" about the issue.

It's team of 80 photographers, videographers, editors and technicians will put in over 15,000 hours during the festival, making it one of the company's biggest annual editorial operations.

Who is that - a celebrity photographer in the photographer pen at the first official photocall of the Cannes Film Festival 2017.

Pedro Almodovar, president of the festival jury, has taken a break from posing for the photographers and chose to take a spot amongst them, being handed a camera and shot his way- until an official asked him to get back to his original duty.

A hopeful start to a light and entertaining festival! He clearly didn't forget to pack his movie star charm, showing up to a series of events to kick off the film festival and winning over press, cinephiles and adoring fans everywhere he went.

Apparently very happy to be part of this jury presided by the huge Pedro Almodóvar, Will Smith - particularly seductive - spent a long time cuckooing and sending kisses to the onlookers who came to applaud him and his co-jurors.

He said: "I have a 16-year-old and an 18-year-old and a 24-year-old at home".

The online giant has refused to show two of its movies in the running for the Palme d'Or in French cinemas because strict rules there mean it would then have to wait three years to put them online.

In "Fahrenheit 11/9" - a nod to the date Trump was elected, as well as Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" that won the Palme d'Or in 2004 and smashed box-office records - Moore has pledged to take down a president who has so far managed to survive an avalanche of scandals and controversies.

Spanish director Pedro Almodovar is leading the jury charged with picking a victor among the 19 films vying for the coveted Palme d'Or top prize, on a panel that also includes Smith, "Interstellar" star Jessica Chastain, and Chinese actress Fan Bingbing.

"The size of the screen should not be smaller than the chair you're sitting in. There's very little cross between going to the cinema and watching what they watch on Netflix".

Not surprisingly, Smith, who is the star of the upcoming Netflix sci-fi fantasy movie Bright, jumped in to defend the massively popular streaming service.

Last week festival organisers changed the rules to effectively ban Netflix films in future, insisting that movies in competition must be shown on the big screen afterwards. They get to see movies that aren't on a screen within 8,000 miles of them. "You must feel small and humble in front of the image that is here to capture you".

Netflix allows Smith's children to "watch films they otherwise wouldn't have seen".

Smith added: "Netflix brings a great connectivity for [my kids] to the world". And now they get to find those artists and they look them up online and they make contact. It's done nothing but broaden my children's cinematic, global comprehension.
