World Leaders Condemn North Korea Missile Test

NKorea's 'new missile' has unprecedented range: Experts

It cited Kim as saying the North would never succumb to what it called the "highly ridiculous" United States strategy of "militarily browbeating only weak countries and nations which have no nukes".

Kim Jong-un personally oversaw the missile launch on Sunday, and was pictured celebrating with his officials afterward. Its capabilities fall in between those of intercontinental ballistic missiles, whose speed at re-entry is said to reach Mach 24 or faster, and the midrange Musudan missiles, which have a range of 2,500km to 4,000km.

North Korea is banned from any rocket launch by the United Nations but it ignores that.

US officials are closely "monitoring" the aftermath of the latest North Korean missile test after the rogue regime claimed that its newest rocket was capable of carrying a nuclear warhead - and that its arsenal could reach American shores. Its ambassador to China said in Beijing on Monday it would continue such test launches "any time, any place".

The missile was launched on an unusually high trajectory, with KCNA saying it flew to an altitude of 2,111.5km and travelled 787km before coming down in the Sea of Japan.

The envoys will meet with high-ranking officials to explain the new South Korean government's policy plans and exchange opinions on how to develop bilateral relations, the presidential Blue House office said.

Seoul- Washington and Tokyo have requested the Security Council to hold an emergency meeting, which could be held today in NY, according to what Uruguay delegation has announced.

In a unanimously agreed statement, the 15-member council said it was of vital importance that North Korea show "sincere commitment to denuclearization through concrete action and stressed the importance of working to reduce tensions".

If North Korea launches a rocket on a lofted trajectory - an angle higher than normal - "there's no guarantee that even the new interceptor we are developing with the USA can shoot it down", former Defense Minister Gen Nakatani told The Nikkei Monday.

France's United Nations ambassador says Security Council members are working on a resolution that would impose new sanctions against North Korea and strengthen enforcement of existing sanctions.

North Korea claimed the missile is capable of being armed with a nuclear warhead. They've failed to stop the North's progress, which includes five nuclear test explosions since 2006. North Korea on Monday, May 1.

Han said South Korea's military separately detected the Sunday launch, using its own intelligence assets. That could strike US military bases in Guam.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters that the launch was "absolutely unacceptable" and that Japan would respond resolutely.

Council diplomats say the US and China, the North's closest ally, have been working on a new sanctions resolution.

The spokesman declined to say where it was bound and added he was not aware how long the Carl Vinson would remain in the region.

North Korea has been testing missiles for weeks, and the status of their nuclear weapons development program has been a source of questions and concern for years.
