Yates, Flynn And The Trump-Russia Investigation

Sally Yates goes under oath

According to Yates, Flynn misled officials and media outlets like NBC News by stating that he did not discuss Barack Obama administration sanctions on Russian Federation when in fact he had. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) said he wants to know how The Washington Post revealed that former national security adviser Michael Flynn had exchanges with Russia's ambassador to the United States in 2016.

This development comes after former president Barrack Obama [official website] said he had warned Trump not to hire Flynn [NYT report].

Mr Trump's press secretary Sean Spicer said in response that if Mr Obama "was seriously concerned" about Mr Flynn's connections to Russian Federation or other foreign countries, he should have withheld Mr Flynn's security clearance. Flynn was sacked as head of military intelligence by the Obama administration in 2014 amid questions about his management style and reports of insubordination.

Yates explained what should have been self-evident: Not only were Pence and the American public entitled to know the truth, but the Russians also knew that Flynn had lied to the vice president - so the Russians had the goods on him.

Speaking for the first time publicly about the first big scandal of the Trump presidency, Ms Yate's testimony is part of the larger investigations by both sides of Congress into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, with USA intelligence services believing this was aimed at helping Mr Trump. Mr Franken said, referring to why Mr Trump did not dismiss Mr Flynn for his misleading statements immediately.

Throughout the Russian Federation probes, the Trump White House has pointed to testimony earlier this year from Clapper that he had seen no evidence in the January intelligence report of collusion between the President's campaign and Russian Federation.

"The Russia-Trump collusion story is a total hoax, when will this taxpayer-funded charade end?" he fumed in one post, while in another, he targeted Ms Yates - claiming she had "said nothing but old news!" after earlier assailing her for allegedly leaking classified information.

Yates detailed her own warnings to the Trump White House about Flynn, including meetings with the White House counsel in which she said that discrepancies over Flynn's contacts with the Russian envoy left him vulnerable to blackmail by Moscow.

Donald Trump has hit back angrily over new claims about his former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who resigned amid controversy over his links with Russian Federation.

Spicer described Yates, who was an Obama appointee, as "someone who is not exactly a supporter of the president's agenda".

It also highlighted the mounting pressure the White House faces from three congressional investigations into Russia's interference in the election.

Yates, a longtime federal prosecutor and Obama administration holdover, had been scheduled to appear weeks ago before the House intelligence committee, but that hearing was canceled.

Meanwhile, the U.S. administration fiercely denied Trump's contested travel ban deliberately single out Muslims during an appeals court hearing Monday - despite the president's campaign call for a blanket Muslim ban.

"You could rationalize that it helps the Russians by obfuscating who was actually responsible", Clapper said. Trump has denied that his aides were involved in the hacking of Democratic groups, but the investigations could cast a shadow over his White House for years.

Spicer said that after Yates informed them of Flynn's conduct, McGahn and his associate "reviewed the situation" and "informed the president right away".
