18 protesters arrested after Philando Castile court decision

Officer acquitted in death

Thousands of people have been taking part in a demonstration in St. Paul, Minnesosta, after a police officer was found not guilty of fatally shooting of a black motorist during a traffic stop past year.

ABC News has the story of the acquittal of the police officer who was accused of second-degree manslaughter. The shooting received national attention when Castile's girlfriend live streamed the moments after on Facebook Live. A rally at the state Capitol on Friday led to a march that shut down a stretch of Interstate 94 and resulted in 18 arrests. By the end of the night, 18 people were arrested, including some journalists.

In the aftermath of protests in Minnesota following a police officer being found not guilty in the shooting death of Philando Castile, Sen.

An attorney for Yanez, Earl Gray, praised the verdict.

The city of St. Anthony issued a statement Friday saying they had "concluded that the public will be best served if Officer Yanez is no longer a police officer in our city".

The finding was in line with recent history showing trials of police officers often end in non-convictions - almost 40 per cent of the time for those that Philip Stinson, a criminologist at Ohio's Bowling Green State University, has tracked since 2005.

During the trial, Yanez testified that Castile was pulling out his gun from his pocket despite his commands not to do so. Castile's girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, is a passenger in the auto, along with her then-4-year-old daughter. And, as in prior cases of Black men being shot and killed, the Justice Department could open an investigation into the case, as Castile's uncle has requested.

Yanez testified that he stopped Castile because he resembled a suspect in a local convenience store robbery days earlier. We are going back down to 1969. He says the jury sympathizes with Castile's family.

"This verdict tells African Americans across the country that they can be killed by police officers with impunity, even when they are following the law, and that it is reasonable for any person interacting with an African American in any way to fear for his or her life", Richmond, D-La., said in a statement. His mother, Valerie Castile, said the police officer got away with "murder".

Protests in the wake of the shooting put another spotlight on the systemic violence faced by black men and women at the hands of police, and watchdog and human rights groups reacted to the verdict by urging an overhaul to police standards for the use of lethal force.

The thousands of people in attendance filled the streets of St. Paul and the grounds near the courthouse.

After approaching his vehicle window, Yanez asked Castile for his license and proof of insurance. "I'm mad as hell right now, yes, I am", she said.

There was also video of the shooting captured from a camera mounted on the dashboard in Yanez's squad auto.
