2 children shot, injured on Chicago playground

2 Girls Shot Outside Elementary School On South Side

Two children were shot on a playground outside a South Side elementary school, innocent bystanders of a drive-by shooting.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says authorities don't believe the injuries are life-threatening.

Police say three people were taken into custody after they were stopped in a vehicle linked to the shooting.

"And we saw the people, we saw two boys that had graduated yesterday, they was running and they was trying to get inside the gate, and while they was shooting, two girls had got shot", said Giara, Warren Elementary student. "It angers me that these little children can not grow up and not think that gunfire is the norm ..."

The seven-year-old was shot in the hand, while the 13-year-old was shot in the thigh. The Tribune reports that officials said the second victim is 7 years old. They were denied entry and were hanging outside school grounds when a auto drove up and somebody started shooting.

"I want my daughter to be around other children, but this makes me sad and angry".

The three suspects were taken into custody in the 8900 block of S. Phillips Ave. just minutes after the shooting, according to police, who determined that the black vehicle had been stolen.

As police investigated and a helicopter circled overhead, the playground was empty, except for a school bag, one white t-shirt and a deflated basketball.

"There is no person in Chicago who is not disgusted by this incident".

Police have not yet confirmed the shooters or their intended targets are known gang members. The AP reports someone in a auto opened fire on nearby teenagers.
