58 presumed dead in London tower blaze, police say

Sadiq Khan is confronted by Kai Ramos

The death toll in the massive fire that engulfed a 24-storey tower here almost doubled to 30 today amid fears that it could climb to "triple figures", even as Scotland Yard launched a criminal investigation into the cause of one of the worst fire tragedies in the country.

Residents had raised concerns about the fire safety of the building prior to the blaze.

Both Prime Minister May and Labour opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn visited the site on Thursday, with May calling for a full inquiry into the blaze.

The government has promised £5 million (around Rs 41.3 crore) for food, clothes and other emergency supplies for the victims, BBC reported.

Before meeting with the survivors, May chaired a "cross-government" meeting at her office "to ensure everything possible is being done to support those affected" by the tragedy, a spokesman said.

"As we do everything we can to help them, we will make sure they have the counselling and emotional support they need in the hard days, weeks and years ahead".

The fire forced residents to flee through black smoke down the single stairwell, jump out of windows or even drop their children from the 120-apartment building. What emerges in the coming weeks and months will be very hard for many people, including politicians and organisations, but we must get to the truth. "But, frankly, the support on the ground for families who needed help or basic information in the initial hours after this appalling disaster was not good enough", she said. "The Prime Minister is distraught about what has happened", said Mr Green, who was appointed Mrs May's deputy in the wake of the election.

"But we may well need help from our close neighbours". "I absolutely get why they're angry".

The queen and her husband, Prince Philip, stood silently on the steps of Buckingham Palace before the start of the Trooping the Color ceremony that each year marks the queen's official birthday, which is traditionally celebrated in June when the weather is warm.

"It is hard to escape a very sombre national mood", Elizabeth said in a message on her official birthday.

In addition to the deadly fire, Britain has suffered three terror attacks in recent months.

"It is hard to escape a very somber national mood", Elizabeth said in a message. "The country has witnessed a succession of bad tragedies".

"This should not be happening in the United Kingdom, this should never happen".
