Arsenal add two new faces to backroom team

Arsenal turn to ex-Liverpool employee for key new position under Arsene Wenger

While Arsenal may not be extremely active adding new players, the club have been active adding new backroom staff and other personnel, perhaps indicating the club's commitment to making the necessary changes as we head towards the later stage of Arsène Wenger's time at Arsenal.

Highly rated fitness expert Darren Burgess is set to join Arsenal from AFL team Port Adelaide.

Port Adelaide have several sport science programs, including one in China, that will now be disrupted by Burgess' departure.

That is because he is now working for Australian rules football side Port Adelaide, who are approaching the climax of their season.

"Reaching this decision has been one of the toughest in my career", said Burgess. "My family loves the lifestyle of Adelaide and more importantly we love everything about the Port Adelaide Football Club", he said.

"I look forward to continuing having a relationship with Port Adelaide from afar and thank the entire club for their support and many great memories over two stints".

Burgess worked at Liverpool between 2010 and 2013, working under Kenny Dalglish, Roy Hodgson and Brendan Rodgers.

Therefore both clubs are yet to thrash out an agreement for when Burgess can begin work at Arsenal's London Colney training base but he is expected to be in position at some point in July.

Port Adelaide confirmed the news on Monday, stating that Burgess, whose appointment has been approved by Arsene Wenger, will see out the remainder of the 2017 AFL season with them.

And the pressure is on after Wenger was handed a new two-year deal despite a disappointing season that ended on a high of winning the FA Cup.

Arsenal chief exec Ivan Gazidis promised angry Gunners fans there would be changes this summer after they failed to reach the Champions League.
