Bake In Space Is Trying To Help Astronauts Defeat Crumbs

All you need to know about the bread that's going to be baked in space

Sometime in 2018, a microgravity oven is slated for launch to the International Space Station where it will bake the first space-grade bread in history.

A team of 22 persons including a university professor is set for a deep sea expedition by NASA to test simulated spacewalks, time delays in space communication and the effect of ketogenic (high-fat, low-carb) diet on astronauts who will be part of future space missions, including to Mars. The noble goal of the mission is "to address the scientific and technical challenges relating to the production of fresh bread in space".

Led by founder Sebastian Marcu, the team is determined to develop a crumb-less bread that astronauts cannot only eat in space, but bake there, too.

In a rare exception, members of the STS-51D crew on board space shuttle Discovery are seen eating bread in April 1985.

The company CEO concluded by stating NASA has made it clear that the International Space Station will be the last USA government-funded space station in LEO - and NanoRacks believes the firm is well positioned to be one of the commercial leaders as NASA focuses on taking America into deep space. Given the microgravity environment, the tiny particles can cause problems if they get into electrical systems and ventilation filters. This innovative approach offers a pathway that is more affordable and involves less risk than fabricating modules on the ground and subsequently launching them into orbit.

NASA's early solution - after Mercury and Gemini crews smuggled deli sandwiches to space - was to pre-cut their bread into bite-size cubes and coat each in gelatin to keep any crumbs contained.

"We wish you good luck in space, Astronaut Jonny Kim!" the US Embassy said in a post on Facebook.

This new experiment is scheduled to take off aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in 2018. NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson floats in the background.

Tortillas now serve as a substitute for bread, but scientists hope the new tasty crumb-free recipe will prove to be a delicious step toward accessible bread that's also out of this world. Even if they will be able to make it crumb-free, the researchers also have to ensure that it will have a pleasing taste. Now, Sebastian Marcu, founder of Germany-based company Bake In Space, is aiming to make bread available for astronauts in space.
