British PM to meet fire survivors in Downing St

Tensions in the local community have grown since Wednesday's deadly blaze at the Grenfell Tower in north Kensington which provided social housing for some 600 people.

"Sadly, at this time there are 58 people who we have been told were in the Grenfell Tower on the night that are missing". Stuart Cundy told reporters on Saturday, adding that the figure could change.

Their visit came just moments before police confirmed the death toll of the blaze had risen to at least 30. The new figure of 58 includes the 30 that had already been announced.

May was criticized for avoiding locals when she visited the burnt-out shell of the 24-storey Grenfell Tower on Thursday, but faced cries of "shame on you" and "coward" when she returned the following day.

In an interview, she was questioned over whether there was a need for the United Kingdom government to accept some responsibility for what had happened. I really hope it won't. "People have lost their lives, people have had their homes destroyed, they have fled for their lives with absolutely nothing".

"People need to know that we can't".

The meeting on Saturday comes amid criticism levelled at Mrs May for not meeting those caught up in the fire in the immediate wake of the tragedy.

May said she expected to announce the name of the judge for a public inquiry within a few days.

She has also pledged £5 million (S$8.8 million) of support, housing guarantees and help with access to bank accounts and cash. The U.K. government has also promised to find homes for the survivors within three weeks at the latest.

On Saturday afternoon, hundreds of protesters gathered in Whitehall to call for her resignation.

She added: "I have ordered that more staff be deployed across the area, wearing high visibility clothing, so they can easily be found, dispense advice and ensure the right support is provided".

Two boys inspect pictures of the missing. Many chased after her armored cars, prompting the police to intervene and push people back.

Later that afternoon, demonstrators stormed the offices of Kensington and Chelsea Council over its handling of the crisis amid concerns that earlier renovation work was linked to the rapid spread of the blaze.

The fire forced residents to flee through black smoke down the single stairwell, jump out of windows or even drop their children from the 120-apartment building.

The 91-year-old monarch said that Britain remains "resolute in the face of adversity" after the horrendous fire and recent extremist attacks in London and Manchester.

As the fire raged, Rania started recording on Facebook Live from her apartment where she was stuck due to thick smoke.
