Doctors 'encouraged' by Scalise's improvement

Capitol Police Called Heroes for Taking Down Gunman

The man who shot House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and others at a congressional baseball practice earlier this week had with him a piece of paper with doodles and the names of three lawmakers, according to a person familiar with the case.

What's more, Special Agent David Bailey, who was injured in the attack during the Republicans' practice in Virginia on Wednesday, threw out the first pitch to a warm welcome.

Scalise is sedated, but the husband and father of two has been able to respond to his doctors and family.

Scalise remained listed in critical condition Thursday night after multiple surgeries, though word came from the hospital during the game that he had improved.

Congressman Steve Scalise is in surgery for a third time at a Washington, D.C. hospital.

Sava said Scalise has a good possibility of recovery after he was at "imminent risk of death" from the gunshot wound two days ago. Because the bullet shattered, there may be hundreds of fragments in Scalise's body and doctors do not intend to try to remove them all, Sava said.

Congress members and aides watched Mr Scalise drag himself through the dirt field after he was shot, leaving a trail of blood behind him. Reporters in Washington tracked Scalise's every hospital update and shared it on social media.

President Trump delivered a videotaped statement, saying, "we will not be intimidated. the game will go on".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Paul Ryan and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi stood side by side to shout: "Let's play ball!" and the crowd chanted "U-S-A!"

Thirty-six hours after a gunman's attack on Republican lawmakers at their baseball practice, GOP and Democratic teams played their annual charity game Thursday night, determined to show unity.

Congressman Steve Scalise, who was supposed to be playing second base for the Republican team, was instead lying in a hospital bed after being critically wounded in the hip. He says Scalise is "in some trouble". Scalise's security detail returned fire, and Hodgkinson was later shot by police and died thereafter.

The president's meaning was unclear as he made the comments at an event on Cuba policy in Miami. The shooter was an IL man, James Hodgkinson, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and Republicans over social media.

"We've had a very, very divided country for many years", Trump said. Democratic Rep. Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania, his team's manager, accepted the trophy, then gave it to his GOP counterpart, Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, to put in Scalise's office on behalf of the Democrats.

Scalise is being treated in the hospital's intensive care unit.
