Firefighters Battling Two Major California Wildfires

Manzanita Fire Grows To 5000 Acres In South California, Evacuation Warnings Issued

The U.S. Forest Service advised people that what appeared to be a new fire in the San Bernardino Mountains was dust being blown about from an area that burned recently northeast of Big Bear Lake.

Firefighters battled high winds as they fought a fire that has grown to 72 square miles (184 square kilometers) and burned 13 homes - larger than any other fire in the country now, state emergency managers said. Fire crews are battling dry, windy conditions and what officials say is a "high potential" for extreme fire behaviour.

The Brian Head Fire has already charred some 46,000 acres, and right now, it's only nine percent contained. "These guys are working their hind ends off and really are heroes", said Garfield County Sheriff Danny Perkins.

A fierce wildfire that has destroyed more than a dozen homes and forced the evacuation of 1,500 residents raged largely unchecked in southwestern Utah for an 11th day, as an army of firefighters struggled to corral the flames.

Similarly, an incident sparked a massive wildfire in California, which was when a vehicle in Los Angeles crashed into a tree, which sparked a fire that spread around quickly due to humidity and burnt nearly 750 acres of land in just three hours. The blaze has since spread about 20 miles east, near Panguitch Lake, according to the Associated Press. On Monday, more evacuations were ordered for folks living in areas expected to see strong winds and low humidity.

Overnight, hand crews, backed by bulldozers, were going to try to get more line around the fire to stop it from spreading. Indeed, a "Red Flag" wildfire danger warning remained in effect through Wednesday from Logan south through Ogden, Salt Lake City (where smoke from the fire had the capital under a brown haze Tuesday), Provo, Manti, Cedar City, St. George and throughout Zion National Park and the Grand Staircase-Escalante regions.

"There's no question that our inability to manage the forests the way they should and could be managed has led to more destruction", he said. John Cammack was left with severe burns after falling from a fire engine when the winds shifted and the flames changed direction. Most of the fire growth from Monday to Tuesday occurred in the northern part of of the fire, the forestry agency said. What they are saying "Things change day-to-day". Aerial efforts to put out a fire northwest of the town were temporarily halted.
