Four tied for lead in US Open

Rickie Fowler

Still, Fowler wrapped up the day just one off the lead of the foursome of Paul Casey, Brian Harman, Tommy Fleetwood and Brooks Koepka.

"I think when you're trying to aim at a target usually at a normal golf course, with normal-width fairways, there's some pressure into hitting the fairway because it is a lot narrower than we have out here", Day said. "There's a lot of different ways to play it".

Casey flew the back of the green with his third shot and finding deep rough but could only move his ball some six inches.

Rickie Fowler failed to capitalize on the great conditions, shooting a 73 that kept him on the first page of the leaderboard but left him in a three-way tie for second place with Jamie Lovemark and JB Holmes. He birdied five straight holes, starting with the 17th after teeing off on the 10th, but that run only served to negate a triple bogey on 14 as well as bogies on 12 and 15 to card a one-under 71.

The world No 2 hit just five of them to tie for last in the 156-man field in that category on day one, but still made four bogeys yesterday despite hitting 11 of 14 fairways.

"I really like this golf course".

Garcia carded an eagle, three birdies and three bogeys in a roller coaster round.

The 39-year-old then parred the 13th to remain one shot off the lead alongside Xander Schauffele, the lowly ranked American who was also out on the course early Friday. Fowler lost his lead with three straight bogeys on the back nine.

He then hacked out his fifth out sideways and now some 52-feet from the hole from where he chipped and two putted.

The 29-year-old, who won his maiden major title at the 2015 US PGA Championship, said the dismal result had come as a surprise given his intense practice in the lead-up.

"I hate just being in the situation where I've been in a good spot and maybe let it get away from me a little bit and let some mistakes compound", Fowler said.

"Obviously, I'm not here on the weekend, so it's unfortunate", Day said.

There were as many amateurs who broke par as players in the top 10 in the world - two each.

"It's pretty frustrating", said Day, still smiling after missing the cut at the American championship. Can he become the seventh straight first-time major victor dating to Jason Day's victory at the 2015 PGA Championship?

In the first round, McIlroy only hit five fairways en route to a 78. It was only his seventh PGA Tour event this year because of a rib injury that has kept him out of action since the Players Championship and caused him to miss the BMW Championship and the Memorial. Neither could recover to make the cut Friday, as McIlroy shot 71 to finish at 5-over and Day shot 75 and finished 10-over.

Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day made the wrong kind of history at the U.S. Open.

Matsuyama vaulted into contention at the U.S. Open with a 7-under 65 on Friday, moving to 5 under and a tie for eighth - just two shots back of the four-way tie atop the crowded leaderboard. "So it's pretty simple".

"You just have to look forward", Scott said.

Meanwhile, Graeme McDowell is also in the midst of his second round and is now one shot clear of Dunne on 3-over but also sitting outside the cut mark.

"Guess what? We get to go home today because Daddy played poorly", Day said to his son, Dash, before walking over to sign autographs.
