Furious Trump blasts Comey sacking probe 'witch hunt'

President Donald Trump speaks about the shooting of House Majority Whip Steve Scales of La. at a baseball practice Thursday

The US president has denied trying to influence the investigation, but admitted Russian Federation was on his mind when he dismissed Comey. Trump had viewed Sessions' recusal as unnecessary, even though Justice Department regulations made it nearly impossible to avoid.

The president tweeted Friday, "After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my 'collusion with the Russians, ' nobody has been able to show any proof".

Regardless of the outcome, the specter of Mueller examining the possibility of obstruction of justice appeared to be a new blow to Trump, whose first five months in office have been clouded by the federal and congressional probes into the Russian Federation issue.

Some of his ire is aimed at Rosenstein and investigative special counsel Robert Mueller, both of whom the president believes are biased against him, associates say.

The lawyer for the president's son-in-law and close adviser said there was nothing surprising about the Post's report. One memo recounts a February request from Trump, during a private meeting in the Oval Office, that Comey end an investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

It was unclear whether his tweet about being under investigation was based on direct knowledge or new media reports that suggest Mr Mueller is examining whether the president obstructed justice by firing Mr Comey.

The move was confirmed by a transition official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss post-election decisions.

Both the House and the Senate also have open investigations into Russian interference in last year's election.

The order by the general counsel for the transition team casts a wide net on documents that could shed light on ties between Trump's presidential campaign and representatives of Russia's government.

The latest White House crisis struck on the evening of Trump's 71st birthday, after a day in which he had won plaudits for his handling of the shooting of Republican Congressman Steve Scalise.

"The message the president is sending through his tweets is that he believes the rule of law doesn't apply to him and that anyone who thinks otherwise will be fired", she said.

The furious early morning barrage of tweets - his second in as many days - came as the special counsel investigating Russia's influence over his election pieced together a high-caliber legal team and readied to begin interviews.

The president tweeted Friday, "The Fake News Media hates when I use what has turned out to be my very powerful Social Media - over 100 million people!"

Trump's Twitter response followed days of intensifying criticism of Mueller from some conservatives who have charged the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director and his team with political bias and have claimed his relationship to Comey and an earlier meeting with Trump amount to conflicts of interest.

"You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!" "I can go around them". Does it become a witch hunt?
