Future Golden Knight? Fleury headlines Vegas expansion draft lists

Wild have 'pretty good idea' who they'll protect in NHL Expansion Draft

McPhee told reporters Sunday that "there were no surprises" when the Golden Knights received the lists and that he was "really pleased with what's available". "We want our players to be good ambassadors off the ice and be part of the Las Vegas community".

General Manager George McPhee of the Las Vegas Golden Knights attends the NHL Combine at HarborCenter on June 3, 2017 in Buffalo, New York.

Former CC defenseman Jaccob Slavin (Carolina) and area native and Boston blue-liner Brandon Carlo are both first or second-year pros and exempt from the expansion draft exposure.

The Blue Jackets aren't the only team being forced to expose players they don't want to lose.

That would mean Stempniak and forward Joakim Nordstrom would be available to the Golden Knights, and Stempniak could be the choice. So, we are now going through the process of trying to put the team together. The fifth-year player, however, won't be ready for the start of the season after having surgery to fix a shoulder injury. Among the juicier ones: The Tennessean's Adam Vignan reports that the Nashville Predators might protect Calle Jarnkrok, potentially exposing James Neal.

What it comes down to is this: The Wild likely would have to pick between protecting center Eric Staal or winger Jason Zucker out of their crop of forwards, and defensemen Jonas Brodin, Matt Dumba, or Marco Scandella.

The unprotected list includes players eligible to become restricted or unrestricted free agents.

Ryan Spooner: In an expansion draft expected to be short on offensive centers, the Bruins know better than to leave Spooner exposed. But it's unlikely the two would consider joining an expansion team at this point in their respective careers. The Golden Knights must select the following number of players at each position: 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goaltenders and must select a minimum of 20 players who are under contract for the 2017-18 season. McPhee is willing to negotiate with any and all teams willing to give up something to keep a certain player.

The Golden Knights must choose 30 players, one from each team.

Doug Armstrong and company protected forwards Vladimir Tarasenko, Jaden Schwartz, Alexander Steen, Paul Stastny, Vladimir Sobotka, Patrik Berglund, and Ryan Reaves, defensemen Alex Pietrangelo, Joel Edmundson, and Jay Bouwmeester, and goaltender Jake Allen.

McPhee provided some fascinating food for thought in his press conference following the league's announcement of all 30 teams' available and protected players.

With next season's salary cap rising $2 million to $75 million next season, as the National Hockey League and NHLPA confirmed Sunday, teams will be knocking down McPhee's door to acquire Marchessault's level of production at that price. The Philadelphia Flyers didn't protect goaltender Michal Neuvirth, who the team signed to a two-year, $5 million contract extension in March. "Every team is this league has a chance to protect their roster". "I don't think this process is any different than, say, a free agency process or a trade deadline process where there's a lot of talk leading up to the anointed hour and then activity happens".
