Subway car derails, disrupts train service in NYC

Delays were reported throughout the subway system.

This photo provided by Jonathan‏ @ThisIsJCali from his Twitter page shows subway passengers on a D train stuck on the tracks as it was headed to the 125th street station, before the lights went out in the vehicle, Tuesday, June 27, 2017, in NY.

And one witness told CBS New York: 'All of a sudden it was like the train just started like banging against the walls of the tunnel. Sources said the train's motorman told investigators they passed the 135th Street Station without incident, and that the tracks were clear of debris and the signals ahead were green.

A subway auto derailed in Manhattan Tuesday morning causing at least three minor injuries, CBS New York reports.

"It was moving side to side, then the power went out, and you could see sparks everywhere", said Michelle Ayob.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) confirmed in a Twitter post that an "A" train had derailed at 125 Street.

Subway riders said they felt a jolt, smelled smoke and thought they were going to die when their train suffered a minor derailment in Harlem during the Tuesday morning rush hour. Earlier in the day, Lhota had said that the agency was investigating why the emergency brake was activated before the derailment.

"It is my expectation that with new leadership brought by Joe Lhota, the MTA will address the fundamental issues plaguing the transit system and overhaul the organizational structure of the MTA", Cuomo said.

"It was travelling at a normal pace when suddenly, it was like a horse that rears, it has been cast in the top, bottom, all sides", said a traveler to NY 1.

"People were panicking, jumping out of their seats, just crying and praying out loud", said another passenger.

That A train was evacuated, as were three other trains in the same tunnel.

The train derailed as the MTA was preparing to celebrate the reopening of a subway station at the southern tip of Manhattan that had been closed since it was flooded by Superstorm Sandy in October 2012. Emergency crews shut off track power after derailments to prevent evacuees from being electrocuted.

The No. 1 train prepares to leave the South Ferry Station, Tuesday June 27, 2017, in NY.

Riders shared pictures and videos on social media of the incident.

"In Manhattan derailed in the subway cars, causing minor injuries to ten passengers", - stated in the published message.

That initiative directs $14 billion over five years toward improving the subway system.

Commuter railroads also have had problems.
