In warm first meeting, Trump and Modi reaffirm India-US ties

Trump Says India and the US Will ‘Destroy Radical Islamic Terrorism

Modi's remarks come at a time when Indian techies are facing problems availing H1-B visas after President Donald Trump put restrictions on it. The US' first couple warmly welcomed Modi and they were seen exchanging pleasantries and having a brief interaction before going inside the White House.

Trump said "The future of our partnership has never looked brighter", said Trump during a joint appearance with Modi in the White House Rose Garden.

Trump declared he was a "true friend" of India and said relations between the two largest democracies have never been better.

Then he pondered the energy sector and said, "We're also looking forward to exporting more American energy to India as your economy grows, including major long-term contracts to purchase American natural gas, which are right now being negotiated, and we will sign them".

Together, the U.S. and India can help chart an optimistic path into the future, one that unleashes the power of new technology, new infrastructure and the enthusiasm and excitement of very hard-working and very dynamic people, he said. "In recent years, to ratchet up geopolitical pressure on China, the U.S. has cozied up to India", an article in the Global Times said. And it "called on Pakistan to ensure that its territory is not used to launch terrorist attacks on other countries".

The Indian prime minister arrived in Washington on Sunday to start his two-day visit to the United States, in an effort to push for closer bilateral ties and strengthen cooperation with Washington.

Other local newspapers and news portals have also given a lot of attention to the much-publicised three day trip of Modi with The Jerusalem Post even creating a separate link, "Modi's Visit", where it has put up stories related to India.

"On defence cooperation, there was a sense that combination of convergence and regular exchanges on policy, the fact that today we are major partners in exercises with each other, all these underline the fact that India and the USA recognise each other key defence partners", foreign secretary S. Jaishankar told reporters at a news conference.

"It is a natural partner in our needs and priorities for economic development", Modi said.

On his part, Trump said that both countries are "determined" to destroy terrorist organisations.

Nevertheless, just weeks ago, Trump accused India of seeking to profit from the Paris climate accord, as he announced his decision to withdraw the USA from the global agreement.

PM Modi will also address the Indian diaspora in the country.

This is the first time the two leaders have met face-to-face.

And, if India is ready to do business with USA - something which China, Japan, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, among others, have learnt to use to their advantage - then the Trump administration is ready to accommodate Indian concerns and aspirations more than half way.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has lauded India for its commitment to renewable energy and the Paris Climate Agreement.

Separatist leaders accuse New Delhi of keeping people in Kashmir, long the centre of a bitter territorial dispute between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan, under the heel of up to 750,000 security forces.

"So, for India, we are an entry (point) to Europe", he said. India is the fastest growing economy in the world Trump said and added, "We hope we will be catching up you very soon".
