India's largest container port disrupted by global cyber attack

Cyber attack: Malware hits Jawaharlal Nehru port operations in Mumbai

The attacks come weeks after global ransomware WannaCry plagued systems across the world.

The government on Wednesday said it has started proactive measures to keep the country insulated from the latest round of ransomware attack, which has hit Europe, adding that so far there was no large-scale impact on India.

MUMBAI Operations at one of three terminals at India's largest container port JNPT, on the outskirts of India's commercial hub of Mumbai, have been disrupted by the global ransomware attack, the port said on Wednesday.

While the Terminal Operator is taking steps to address the issues disrupting the operations, it is anticipated that there could be bunching of in-bound and out-bound container cargo.

The virulent strain of malicious software appears to have been sown in Ukraine, where it badly affected much of the government and private sector on the eve of a holiday celebrating a post-Soviet constitution.

The ransomware virus crippled computers running Microsoft Corp's Windows by encrypting hard drives and overwriting files, then demanded $300 in bitcoin payments to restore access.

"An unforeseen situation has developed at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Sheva owing to disruption in the operations of one of the private terminal operator, APM Maersk at JNPT".

In the United States, it affected companies such as drug-maker Merck and food conglomerate Mondelez International.

A local news agency quoted a JNPT official as saying that the operations at Gateway Terminals India (GTI) have come to a standstill due to the malware attack.

The official explained that JNPT is trying to help the company, but there is little that others can do as the problem is with the systems.

We continue to assess the situation. That might be because the email provider hosting that address, Berlin-based Posteo, pulled the plug on the account before the infection became widely known.
