Iran: US travel ban is 'racist' and 'unfair'

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi

The Supreme Court ruled on Monday morning that it would grant petitions for certiorari and grant stay applications in part on President Trump's travel bans.

In a statement released by the White House President, Donald Trump said: "today's unanimous #Supreme Court decision is a clear victory for our national security".

Zarif also tweeted on Tuesday, "A bigoted ban on Muslims will not keep USA safer". "The truth is it's not a great win because the executive order is not allowed to go into effect for the people who have a deep connection to the United States, and that's most people who are coming here".

Becca Heller, executive director for the International Refugee Assistance Project, said individuals most likely to be affected are those seeking tourist visas from the six countries in question.

The court also gave examples of who may qualify for exemptions, including those with close family ties in the United States, obtaining a place at a US university, or offers of employment.

The exception will be those residents of the forbidden countries that have any relationship with the United States citizens, the prohibition against them is declared invalid by the court.

In what Trump declared a "clear victory for our national security", the Supreme Court on June 26 lifted lower-court decisions blocking the president's 120-day suspension of the US refugee program and a 90-day ban on visitors from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.

The highest court in the land also modified the blocks placed on the ban by lower courts, allowing a limited version to go into effect while the court waits to hear arguments.

Trump's original order was revised in March to remove Iraq from the list of countries and withdraw the restrictions on green card holders.

A broad interpretation, for example, could allow for a contract or reservation with a rental auto agency or hotel in the United States to be considered legitimate relationship, the officials said.
