Louisiana senators noncommittal on Senate health bill

Ryan I would not bet against McConnell

One of the most vocal opponents to his own party's plan, Senator Paul took a stand against the legislation whose architect was the most powerful GOP member of the Senate, Leader Mitch McConnell.

Senate Republicans' decision Tuesday to delay a vote on a plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act could be a blessing in disguise.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell brought out the new proposed bill on Thursday, June 22.

Trump and other fellow Republicans have made repealing the so-called Obamacare health care reforms enacted under his predecessor a top priority.

It's "a big, complicated subject", and it's "hard to pull together and hard to pass", McConnell said, though he's "optimistic we're going to get to a result that's better than the status quo".

Moderate senators said the bill would harm some of their vulnerable constituents, while conservatives said it had too much government interference. "There are a lot of good reasons not to have the vote this week", Colbert said, finding just one: "McConnell would have lost, and that's it".

The bill provides billions in tax cuts to insurance companies and the wealthy, while allowing states to drop several now mandated benefits, such as maternity care and hospital services.

Erin Montgomery, a spokesperson for the group, said, "America First Policies is pleased to learn that Senator Dean Heller has chose to come back to the table to negotiate with his colleagues on the Senate bill".

McConnell called White House chief of staff Reince Priebus this weekend and expressed his displeasure about America First going after Heller, a source tells CNN.

After the delay was announced, Democrats Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer said Republicans "cannot excise the rotten core" of the bill. "I don't think he's getting into the details about what these bills actually do", King told MSNBC.

Sens. Rand Paul (Ky.), Ted Cruz (Texas), Ron Johnson (Wis.) and Mike Lee (Utah) opposed the bill early on, complaining that the overhaul isn't the two-part repeal and replace process long promised to GOP voters.

It also highlights the deep ideological divides within the party over how to improve the health care system while not cutting millions of Americans out of insurance coverage.

He went on to say: "This will be great if we get it done". Collins noted that the U.S. Senate could continue working on the amendment of the bill. The bill would cut taxes, reduce the deficit and phase out the Medicaid expansion implemented by Barack Obama's health law.

The 22 million extra uninsured Americans were just 1 million fewer than the number the budget office estimated would become uninsured under the House version. "There's more work to do on this, but there's also more understanding that has to be provided in terms of the CBO score". So if people did see a decrease in their premium it would likely be associated with reduced coverage.
