Montana man is bank robber dubbed 'AK-47 bandit'

This undated image from surveillance video released by the FBI shows the suspect known as the AK-47 Bandit. Federal agents found homemade bombs in the Montana home of Richard Gathercole a man they suspect is the “AK-47 Bandit,” who is wanted for a

The Montana sheriff's office did not say how Gathercole is connected to the home where the bombs were found.

During the pursuit, Gathercole crashed his vehicle, but authorities later learned that he likely stole a truck from a nearby farm and continued across the Nebraska state line.

She declined to confirm or deny that Gathercole is suspected of being the "AK-47 Bandit" who robbed banks in California, Washington and Idaho in 2012 and a Nebraska bank in 2014. He was also usually seen wearing a balaclava mask.

The FBI previously offered up to $100,000 reward for information leading to the man's arrest and conviction.

Though the man appeared to be laying low over the past few years - the most recent robbery he is linked to was in July 2015, in Iowa - Comstock said the case remained a priority for the Chino Police Department.

"You know that." He said: "Yeah, I know".

Billings Police recovered several improvised explosive devices in Roundup at the resident of Richard L. Gathercole, who was arrested on suspicion of shooting at a trooper in Kansas Monday. The bank robberies attributed to the AK-47 series began in 2012 when the bank robber shot and wounded a police officer in Chino, California, following a bank robbery. Following the armed bank robbery, a police officer patrolling the area came upon the bank robbery suspect who was fleeing the bank he had just robbed with the assault rifle.

Stephen Woolery, special agent in charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Los Angeles, said Tuesday that Richard Gathercole of Roundup, Montana, was arrested last week in Lexington, Nebraska.

Gathercole was previously identified as being from San Jacinto, California, after his arrest in Nebraska at a gas station in Lexington.

The Latest on a fugitive arrested in Kansas and an investigation into a series of bank robberies.

Based on a variety of factors, to include the description of the suspect and evidence found, investigators suspect that Gathercole may be responsible for the series of six bank robberies linked to the AK-47 Bandit. Woolery declined to comment on the report.

"There are bank robbers, and there are cop killers".

"He will never ever target another police officer as long as we keep this person in custody", Ramos said. "It was intentional. He used the AK-47 to try and take one of our officers out".

Gathercole also faces a charge of attempted murder in Kansas.

When a second deputy arrived, the two officers arrested Gathercole without incident, according to the Sheriff's Office. Gathercole was apprehended by the Dawson County Nebraska Sheriff's Office and is now being held in Nebraska on suspicion of state violations pending further investigation.
