Official talks on Brexit to start Monday

Brexit talks may not start on June 19 David Davis suggests

May hopes with their backing her Conservative party will again command the majority it lost in last Thursday's election.

According to the statement issued on Thursday, the European Union and the United Kingdom are set to begin negotiations on Article 50, which was triggered on March 29 and sets out the procedure for withdrawing from the 27-member bloc, reports Efe news.

"Going overseas and being seen to be the prime minister and talking to the president of France, being seen to be wheeler-dealing on the worldwide stage, is a classic move to shore up authority at home", he told AFP.

Germany expects Britain and the European Union to start negotiations over Britain's departure from the EU on Monday as planned, a government spokesman said on Friday.

The Brexit Secretary said the talks would take place that week, but not necessarily on the Monday due to the clash with the Queen's Speech at Westminster.

"Like Alice in Wonderland, not all the doors are the same".

"We would restore faith in politics if we could show that this parliament can at least function in presenting a view in the national interest which would command a majority on a cross-party basis", said veteran pro-European Conservative lawmaker Ken Clarke.

Divisions over Europe helped sink the premierships of May's predecessors Margaret Thatcher, John Major and Cameron, and many of her lawmakers and party members favor a sharp break with the EU.

"Next week, it will be three months after the sending of the Article 50 letter.

As of yet, no date for opening the negotiations has been agreed", an European Union official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Also on the cabinet's agenda were the talks to secure an alliance where the DUP backs the Conservatives on a vote-by-vote basis in parliament, rather than a formal coalition government.

May is holding talks Thursday with other Northern Ireland political parties amid warnings the expected DUP deal will undermine the peace process.

London's neutrality is key to the delicate balance of power in Northern Ireland, which was once plagued by violence over Britain's control of the province.
