$870K awarded to man whose doctor removed the wrong testicle

A Pennsylvania man has been awarded nearly one million dollars after a botched surgery left him with only one testical - the one he didn't want removed.

When Long performed the surgery at JC Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon, he actually removed Hanes' healthy left testicle.

Steven Hanes, a 54-year-old from Mount Union in Pennsylvania, went into surgery in 2013 to have one of his testicles removed, Tech Times reports. He had suffered severe pain for years, and medical imaging and records showed that the testicle was about half the size of its counterpart. Hanes said that Long was reckless because he did not properly identify the testicle that was meant to be removed.

This week, a jury in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania awarded damages of $870,000 to Hanes in his lawsuit against Long and the hospital.

Hanes has not had his right testicle removed although it continues to cause him pain.

Hanes' lawyer says his client has more frequent pain in his right testicle, and that he lives in "debilitating fear" of having more surgery.

If Haines did seek further surgery, he would be left without any testicles and would require testosterone treatment for the rest of his life. This is the first verdict of medical malpractice west of Harrisburg in 25-years for the state of Pennsylvania.
