Pau Gasol compares Rafael Nadal's achievements to greatest ever in sport

Spain's Rafael Nadal clenches his fist invictory after defeating Austria's Dominic Thiem during their semifinal match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium Friday

Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka reacts as he plays Spain's Rafael Nadal during their final match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium, Sunday, June 11, 2017 in Paris.

The Swiss star hoped to win his fourth Grand Slam title in as many finals, and while the records of each of the players created a breeding ground for intensity, emotion and battle, Nadal surged to a dominant win against Wawrinka 6-2, 6-3, 6-1. Nadal continued to hold serve easily and then, getting his groundstrokes right and playing with plenty of depth, broke on Wawrinka's very next service game to take the lead 4-2.

It was Nadal's fifteenth major Grand Slam crown.

For me, to pass Federer as the greatest of all time, Nadal would have to pass Federer in major titles and he would need to do so by winning titles, not at the French Open. Twelve years later he is still chasing rival Roger Federer for the all-time Grand Slam standings.

First game of the third set and Nadal broke again as the man who stunned him in the 2014 Australian Open final suffered further damage.

Nadal dominated the contest from start to finish against Wawrinka, who was simply helpless to get into the match, with all the key points going the way of the Spaniard.

He struggled ion front of Nadal on Sunday. But the barrel-chested "Stanimal" was powerless as Nadal turned the final into an exhibition of his clayclourt supremacy- taking his French Open record to an eye-watering 79-2. "I played against the biggest clay court player ever", said Wawrinka. "It's the most important tournament in my career and to win again is something I can't describe". He's the best player on the circuit this year and has chances there. From the opening serve, the win was nearly never in doubt for the 31-year-old Spaniard, who now has a record 10 French Open victories to his name.

"This final to win La Decima for me is very, very special".

Rafael Nadal (ESP) in action during his match against Dominic Thiem (AUT) on day thirteen of the 2017 French Open tennis tournament at Stade Roland Garros. But not only here: since the beginning of the year, you can see he's playing more aggressively, staying closer to the line.

The second game of the second set exemplified the sublime form Nadal was in.

Wawrinka insisted a five-set semifinal win Friday over No. 1-ranked Andy Murray did not take anything out of him physically.

Sunday was also the first time since 1969 that the Roland Garros final had featured two men over 30.

"When you play against them, you have to go for your shots and you shouldn't think too much".

Wawrinka, who spent almost five hours more on court than Nadal to reach the final, looked confused and heavy-legged although he did have a glimmer in the third game when Nadal, still settling down, saved a break point.

The only time Wawrinka matched Nadal's strokes was in the early part of the first set in when he held the first two service games and had a break point in the third game.
