Pokemon GO Gym Shutdowns Hint at Imminent Release of Summer Anniversary Update

It's a gym Jim

Even if you can't knock a rival team from their throne, their individual Pokemon will lose motivation over time and as a result of defeats, temporarily lowering their CP.

Pokemon Go has hinted for months that they wanted to change the game's gym system, which is largely seen as a stagnant feature. Opposing players can battle these Pokemon in the order they were assigned to the Gym. We've now got official confirmation from Niantic themselves that Pokemon GO gyms are closing today, which means the gym rework is probably almost here too.

You can check out the new Gym gameplay screenshots below.

Now that gyms are finally about to close, there's another question we need to ask: what's going to happen when they do? In its statement, Niantic assured players that the gym shutdown would be making way for exciting new features to the game, though the developer did not mention nor enumerate exactly what features would be making a debut in the mobile title. For your efforts, you'll be able to earn gym badges, which you can level up to potentially get better items at PokeStops and gyms.

Raids, meanwhile, should be arriving in "the weeks ahead", first to select players as a beta.

Raid Battles will let trainers team up to fight extremely powerful "raid boss" Pokemon.

True to form, Niantic's official announcement did not specify when the gym shutdowns would take effect in the game. If you bring it down in five minutes, you'll get a shot at capturing it.

You know, the gym mechanic is something in Pokémon Go which we really, really want to improve, so that's gonna be the next big area for us. Those that take part in raids frequently-and succeed more often than not-will be invited to enter exclusive Raids that "can" yield legendary Pokemon.
