Police Launch Criminal Inquiry into Grenfell Tower Blaze

Government will do ‘whatever is required’ following Grenfell Tower blaze

Stuart Cundy, commander of the Metropolitan Police, expects the death toll to rise, but he has thus far declined to comment on any details of the missing people due to the complexity and difficulty of the identifying process. "Right now, people want answers", she said.

He added: "We would like the chief executive of the council to make public commitments on what the council is going to do for the victims of this borough, and for all the other buildings in the borough that could stand the same fate at Grenfell Towers". "I thank them for all they are doing to help the victims of this devastating fire", he said.

The fire was initially extinguished shortly after 1am - a full 24 hours after the first alarms were raised - paving the way for tentative searches in Grenfell's worst-affected areas.

"I have said it before, you have my absolute assurance that as soon as I can possibly tell you something that I know to be accurate, I will tell you".

Harley Facades, which fitted the panels, said in a statement: "At this time, we are not aware of any link between the fire and the exterior cladding".

Mr Cundy said the investigation would consider whether any criminal offences had been committed and would also involve the London Fire Brigade and the Health and Safety Executive.

Built in 1974, an 8.7-million-pound (S$15 million) refurbishment of the tower was completed past year and included new windows and a heating system. "Understandably, the residents are very angry and concerned", he said.

They could also anger community members who have demanded answers about what caused the blaze, that left at least 30 dead and dozens more injured.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince William visited an aid distribution site and were meeting with volunteers.

Local residents shouted angry questions when London mayor Sadiq Khan paid a visit to the area. "People have lost their lives, people have had their homes destroyed, they have fled for their lives with absolutely nothing".

"There is considerable damage within Grenfell Tower", he said.

Around 70 people are missing, according to Britain's Press Association, and identification of the victims is proving very hard.

British Prime Minister Theresa May paid a visit Friday to a refuge center at St. Clements Church, where survivors and the loved ones of victims from this week's fire at Grenfell Tower have congregated. Twenty-four people are still hospitalized, 12 of whom are in critical condition.

May has been criticised from within her own Conservative Party over her response and she pledged on Thursday to hold a public inquiry into the fire at the social housing block.

The blaze ripped through the building early Wednesday, trapping many residents in their homes.

Their teams were forced to leave the 24-storey building yesterday afternoon when the fire restarted, delaying further the efforts to reach upper floors - where many victims are thought to have been trapped.
