Scalise Upgraded to 'Serious' Condition After Another Surgery

The Latest: Congressional women's team hits practice field

Scalise has undergone multiple surgeries and he is expected to need more surgeries. Scalise was shot Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, . In this undated file photo, James Hodgkinson holds a sign during a protest outside of a United States Post Office in Belleville, Ill.

According to the American Hospital Association, "serious" and "critical" condition is among the two most grave designations that medical officials use to describe a patient's general condition, though "serious" is a less urgent designation than "critical".

In a statement released on behalf of the House majority whip's family, MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Scalise is now in serious condition.

The 51-year-old Republican congressman from Louisiana underwent another surgery on Saturday, the hospital treating him said, which was at least his third operation since being transported to the facility.

"He's having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought", he said, adding that he hoped the country could become more unified in the aftermath of the shooting.

The attack cast a pall over Washington Wednesday, but leaders of both major parties vowed to return to business Thursday, and the annual congressional baseball game went on as scheduled that night.

Hodgkinson sprayed rifle fire at Republican congressmen on Wednesday as they practiced for a charity baseball game.

The officials said Friday that the significance of the list was not known.

Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, arrived at the hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding, Sava said.

Two other victims - US Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner who was shot in the ankle, and lobbyist Matt Mika who was shot in the chest - also remain hospitalised.
