Senate health bill would leave 22 million more uninsured by 2026

Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mc Connell of Ky. talks with Secretary for the Majority Laura Dove as he walks to his office on Capitol Hill in Washington Monday

Senate Republican leaders on Tuesday delayed a vote on health care legislation until after the July 4 recess, CBS News has confirmed.

After Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell postponed this week's vote on the GOP's health care reform bill amid faltering support, the next step depends on which of a handful of competing options GOP leaders pursue. With unanimous Democratic opposition, the bill could only afford to lose two GOP votes and pass, and at least five GOP senators were opposed to beginning debate on the bill.

But after a Congressional Budget Office score found the legislation would leave 22 million more people uninsured over the next decade, several Republicans said they would not back a procedural vote on the bill.

Utah's senators, on opposite sides of the debate over the Senate's health care bill, joined their Republican colleagues at a meeting Tuesday with President Donald Trump after plans were scrapped for a vote this week.

McConnell first delivered the message to GOP senators at a private lunch attended by Vice President Mike Pence and White House chief of staff Reince Priebus. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Sen. Reconciliation does not allow for a filibuster, so a senator could not delay a vote on the bill indefinitely. Johnson has been adamant in recent days to hold off on a vote on the bill, which leadership is pushing to happen before the July 4 recess.

Lee deserves credit, Matheson said, for "standing up for the hardworking Utahn, the one who's not getting anything out of the current bill".

I hope that his bill suffers a grave injury and then has to rely on Trumpcare to fix it.

McConnell wants to win Senate passage this week.

Before the budget office released its report on Monday, the American Medical Association officially announced its opposition to the bill, and the National Governors Association urged the Senate to slow down.

Suozzi: "This CBO score confirms what we already knew, which is the Senate's health care bill would be a disaster for the American people".

If the Senate passes a bill, it will either have to be approved by the House, which passed its own version last month, or the two chambers would reconcile their differences in a conference committee.

Passing the measure would hand Mr Trump a legislative win as he seeks to shift attention after weeks of questions over Russia's role in last year's United States presidential election.

Three sources told the news site that some of the money might be spent on health savings accounts to woo Republicans Sens.

"I think the resistance [to the health care bill] is going to continue", said Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, before the delay was announced, said he "would not bet against Mitch McConnell".

The bill "does not do enough to combat the opioid epidemic that is devastating my state, cuts traditional Medicaid too deeply, and harms rural health care providers", West Virginia U.S. Sen.
