Stars hit Twitter with outrage following Philando Castile death verdict

Protests follow Philando Castile shooting verdict

The protesters had been engaged in a peaceful demonstration Friday outside the Minnesota State Capitol, before a group of about 1,500 of them chose to stand in the middle of Interstate 94, blocking traffic on the freeway, police said.

Thousands of people took to the streets Friday to protest the not guilty verdict in the Philando Castile killing trial.

Yanez said he acted because he feared for his life and believed Castile was reaching for a gun.

Castile's shooting was among a string of killings of black people by police around the USA, and the livestreaming of its aftermath by Castile's girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, attracted even more attention. The Twin Cities NBC affiliate KARE 11 and CBS affiliate WCCO captured arial footage of the march.

Holmes, as well as others who attended Sunday's rally - steps from where her son was shot - said she wasn't surprised by the verdict.

"We've got to think bigger than that", she said. Interim executive director of the ACLU of Minnesota Teresa Nelson stated that Castile is one of 1,092 people were killed by police in 2016, a number that is probably less shocking than it should be, given the recent string of highly-publicized incidents.

Taylor, whose four-year-old daughter was in the backseat, said Castile told the officer: "Sir, I have to tell you, I do have a firearm on me". "I urge each of us to move forward in a way that is peaceful and respectful of everyone - residents, demonstrators and police officers alike", Mayor Christopher Coleman said in a statement.

Wiley added: "I can not stop crying for you, Philando", and Aduba wrote: "Truth lies somewhere here: until we value & speak for the lives of all people, we remain hinged to this chapter of history".

"This city killed my son and the murderer got away", an angry Valerie Castile, the victim's mother, told a crowd.

The defense argued Castile, who had traces of marijuana in his system, was stoned and it affected his responses to Yanez's commands.

USA police officer Jeronimo Yanez has been acquitted over the shooting of a black motorist. During the exchange, Castile told Yanez that he had a firearm on him at the time. "I'm mad as hell right now, yes, I am", she said.

Castile had a license to carry a gun, but he hadn't told the officer that before the shooting took place. They raised questions about discrepancies in Reynolds' statements to investigators, including where Castile carried his wallet and who purchased the marijuana that was in the auto.

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton issued a statement calling Castile's death a "terrible tragedy", while emphasizing the ongoing efforts to improve police-community relations. Her son was wearing a seatbelt and in a vehicle with his girlfriend and her then-4-year-old daughter when he was shot.

The Father's Day protesters marched to the Silver Lake Village shopping district and briefly occupied several intersections along the way.

A group of protestors peeled off from the pack and headed to Interstate 94 in St. Paul; the freeway was shutdown in both directions.
