Telescope to focus on black holes

China space telescope

The X-ray probe, dubbed Insight, was launched to observe compact objects such as black holes or neutron stars. Over time, there have been incredible revelations about its structure and evolution.

China's first astronomical satellite, HXMT is expected to operate for four years. A long March-4B rocket lifted the space telescope from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China's Gobi Desert and placed it into an orbit of 550 kilometers above the earth.

It is the nation's first space-based X-ray observatory and is created to work for at least four years in a low-Earth orbit, according to the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence, which oversees China's space programmes.

This incredible piece of equipment will search for black holes, pulsars, and many other things that scientists still have much to learn about hidden deep in the outer reaches of the universe.

China's first X-ray observatory will focus on learning about black holes.

"We are looking forward to discovering new activities of black holes and studying the state of neutron stars under extreme gravity and density conditions, and physical laws under extreme magnetic fields", read a statement from Zhang Shuangnan, HXMT lead scientist. As a result, researchers will be the technology to find gamma-ray bursts, pulsars, and black holes more efficiently.

"No matter how bright the sources are, our telescope won't be blinded", chief designer Chen Yong said.

Zhang Shuangnan, HXMT lead scientist, said the satellite's developers found that a set of HXMT high-energy detectors, originally created to shield background noises caused by unwanted particles, could be adjusted to observe gamma-ray bursts.

Beijing sees its multi-billion-dollar space program as a symbol of its rise and of the Communist Party's success in turning around the fortunes of the once poverty-stricken nation.

China has also scheduled a launch of the core module of its manned space station in 2019 that will get into operation by 2022.

China's Long March-4B launch vehicle is also a long awaited engineering development, and feasibility studies for the projectile, also known as the Chang Zheng-4, began in 1982.
