Ten Commandments monument installed at Arkansas Capitol

10 Commandments Tablet Installed On Arkansas Capitol Grounds

Sklar says the Ten Commandments monument does what she believes Rapert and others intend: to assert "that Christianity in part has some special place in American tradition, has a higher place, has a more important role".

"To erect a religiously divisive monument in this day and age is really just to thumb your nose at everybody who doesn't belong to a particular religious group and say, 'You're a second hand citizen". "We have a attractive Capitol grounds, but we did not have a monument that actually honored the historical moral foundation of law".

Supporters of the monument, like Republican state Senator Jason Rapert, say the display honors the roll the Ten Commandments have played in the history of the nation's law.

According to Arkansas Online, Michael Tate Reed was arrested after he smashed into the monument, destroying it, less than 24 hours after the controversial statue was erected.

He is accused driving a vehicle into Arkansas' new Ten Commandments monument on the state Capitol grounds in Little Rock. A private foundation raised more than $26,000 for the original monument and its installation.

Authorities say Michael T. Reed II drove a 2016 Dodge Dart into the 6,000-pound granite slab at about 4:47 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

However, the Arkansas monument is a replica of a display at the Texas Capitol that was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2005, the Associated Press reports. That driver was also identified as Michael T. Reed of Van Buren, Ark. The Oklahoma Supreme Court ordered the removal of a Ten Commandments display from that state's Capitol in 2015, and the state's voters a year ago rejected an initiative aimed at allowing the monument to return.

Micahel Reed, a resident of Van Buren, Arkansas was booked in Pulaski County Jail on preliminary charges of defacing objects of public interest, criminal trespass and first-degree criminal mischief, with Capitol Police listed as the arrest agency.

The ACLU of Arkansas says it will sue to remove the monument from the Capitol grounds.

Chris Powell, the assistant director of communications to Arkansas Secretary of State Mark Martin, told CNN his office set up a hotline for comments received.

The Arkansas monument fell to the ground and broke into multiple pieces.

Act S1231 is a law, sponsored by Rapert, which required the monument be built somewhere on Capitol grounds.
