Tottenham demand whopping £50m for key ace as PL rivals circle

Man Utd Transfer News Eric Dier deal can be done for £50m

Both the Daily Mail and The Sun report that missing out on signing Maguire from Hull could spur Tottenham into action with regards to Smalling.

United spent over £30m on Benfica's Victor Lindelof and it's widely expected the Swedish global will partner Eric Bailly as Jose Mourinho looks to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

Smalling appears to now be surplus to requirements at United, after the club completed the signing of Viktor Lindelof and it is likely that the club will allow him to leave, should they receive a good offer.

Despite being an integral part of the back four last season, Smalling's future at Old Trafford is mired in doubt.

He managed 36 appearances across all competitions last season and competition for places is set to be even tougher next year, with the likes of Eric Bailly, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and new arrival Lindelof competing for a starting spot. The self-proclaimed Special One wants the England worldwide in his squad for the start of the new campaign. With Kyle Walker also set to depart, Spurs back line is looking thin on numbers.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis has a put a new central defender high on his wanted list and has already targeted a move for John Terry following his release from Chelsea, however Smalling is also said to be on his wanted list. He may not be the most glamorous of signings, but the England global is a ready-made player that could provide strong competition at Spurs.
