Trump confirms he's under investigation over ex-FBI director Comey's firing

Trump attacks obstruction of justice probe by former FBI chief Mueller

President Donald Trump wants to make it very clear to all Americans: An investigation of his campaign's tied to Moscow is a "witch hunt", plain and simple.

President Donald Trump made a surprising comment about the possible investigation into obstruction of justice for firing former FBI Director James Comey.

But Robert Mueller has been appointed special counsel to investigate Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign. According to the Post, both Comey and Daniel Coats, director of national Intelligence, have said Trump sought their help in hopes the FBI would drop the investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Aides and volunteers on Donald Trump's presidential transition were instructed Thursday to save any records related to "several pending investigations into potential attempts by Russian Federation interests to influence the 2016 election", according to a memo provided to POLITICO.

Trump advisers and confidants describe the president as increasingly angry over the investigation, yelling at television sets in the White House carrying coverage and insisting he is the target of a conspiracy to discredit - and potentially end - his presidency.

Mueller is overseeing a host of investigations involving people who are or were in Trump's orbit, people familiar with the probe were quoted as saying.

A source on Trump's legal team claimed the president was referring to a Washington Post story "from the other night" rather than confirming he is being investigated.

A person familiar with Mueller's inquiry, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Thursday Mueller was looking into whether Trump or others attempted to obstruct the Russian Federation investigation.

Accusations of obstruction arose last month when Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. On Friday morning, the president publicly suggested that his deputy attorney general had joined a conspiracy against him.

Robert Mueller's investigation enjoys some independence from the Justice Department bureaucracy. "Nice", the president tweeted. On Monday, a Trump friend said the president was considering dismissing Mueller although the White House said later he had no plans to do so.

The Democratic National Committee said it saw a need for Rosenstein to recuse himself, but it said control over the investigation should be given to Mueller and not another Trump appointee.

The Senate Intelligence Committee is holding a public hearing next week to gather more information on Russia's interference in last year's elections.

Putin echoed Trump's criticism of Comey, saying it was "very strange" a former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief leaked details of his conversations with the USA president to the media through a friend. Comey also testified he had told Trump he was not under investigation.

Rosenstein's statement read: "Americans should exercise caution before accepting as true any stories attributed to anonymous 'officials, ' particularly when they do not identify the country-let alone the branch or agency of government-with which the alleged sources supposedly are affiliated".
